Stupid Firefox Tricks
« on: November 12, 2012, 03:28:54 am »

I recently mad the change over from IE9 to Firefox full time, so that I could have AdBlock and NoScript. But I'm not quite familiar with all of the tips and tricks and useful "I didn't know you could do that" kinda stuff yet. Anyone that uses Firefox, please tell me about all of the non-obvious features that I might be missing out on.

When you right click, Bookmark a page a little box appears to name/config the bookmark.  Just click anywhere on the screen to get the box away and save the bookmark without touching the box.

1st thing to do is install Adblock Plus from addons menu.  Then go into Adblock filter options and deslesct "show non intrusive ads" to get spam free browsing experience.  Especially for getting rid of every 2nd screen FB advert or popup videos and adverts on Youtube.

Also handy to add "fullscreen" "zoom in/out" to toolbar at top of screen instead of having to use keyboard shortcuts all time.  Especially handy now adblock plus doubles your screen space with all the removed adverts.

Browsing with only a touchpad has taught me these:

Ctrl + T: makes a new tab
Ctrl + shift + T: re-opens the tab you most recently closed.
Alt + →: switches focus to the tab to the right.
Alt + ←: switches focus to the tab to the left.
Alt + Home: bring up the home page.
F5: reloads the page
Ctrl+ F5: reloads the page while emptying the page cache. (Useful if pictures aren't loading properly.)
Tab will cycle through links and objects, but Shift + Tab will cycle in reverse.
Ctrl + "+": will zoom in.
Ctrl + "-": will zoom out.
Ctrl + F: brings up the text searching bar
Ctrl + K: selects the search bar, which you can then type in.

While bringing up a context menu by right clicking, you can press the underlined letter in the phrase you want instead of moving your mouse to select it. For example, right click an image, and you can just press "I" to view it, "E" to save it, "Y" to copy it, "O" to copy the link, and so forth.

Under Clear Recent History, clearing everything is nice. Gives the Internet a fresh look.

Javascript disabling is under Content in Options.

Customize your toolbar. There are several things that are off by default and can be placed anywhere, like a progress circle, which is useful for making sure you aren't frozen.

You can do a lot to customize your toolbar- look up an FAQ on it. Also, manage addons and plugins in the "About:addons" screen (enter that into your URL bar).

I haven't used IE in a long time, but recently I often seem to be dragging links into the tab bar to open them into new tabs automatically. Not that much of a trick but when I can't do it in other browsers it's frustrating.

You can also just highlight the links and right click "open in new tab"

Theres also google search on right click, just highlight something, right click, google to open new google search window with results.

New tabs can be created by middle-clicking on a link.

/ opens "Quick Find".

Ctrl+0 resets the zoom.

Text Link is an add-on that allows you to double-click on non-linked URLs instead of having to copy/paste.

Personas are pretty neat.

Middle clicking on links creates new tabs, and middle clicking on tabs closes them.

Posting to watch. I may have something constructive to say later, but right now I'm brain-addled from too much sick kid.

about:config (It's a URL.)
It's my absolute favourite feature of Firefox. If it didn't exist, I would have already have resorted to trying to program my own browser.
It's a nightmare to navigate, and I often find myself googling which setting I want to change because of the lack of explanation behind it... But it's a very useful feature.

For example, if you're yearning for a "good old" browser, then "browser.tabs.onTop:false" is what you're looking for. Personally, I'm quite fond of "browser.newtab.url:about:blank", as I tend to open a tab and leave it for several hours before choosing what to do with it.

Also, as an expansion on their primitive warning, check what the setting does before you change it!

Ctrl+0 resets the zoom.
Without a doubt, this is the most valuable information posted so far.
It's surprisingly easy to accidentally zoom in or out and then wonder why a page looks funny.

Is there a page somewhere with a list of what all those variables change?

Middle clicking a tab closes it. Middle clicking the empty space (or double clicking, if you tell it to in config) opens a tab.

To avoid misclicks, feel feel to turn off the "close tab" 'x's and just middle click your way to happiness.

Also, I like to drag the reload button out of the address bar and separate out that, back, forward, start, and stop.
