A Guy On A Ledge
« on: November 09, 2012, 03:26:52 am »

So the dwarven caravan arrives to trade.

Okay.

I'm in the process of building walls and ceiling around the depot (in case I decide to drown the elves and steal their shit).

Well....

He's got exactly 1 tile to stand on, because I built the wall and he was on the other side, and it's in the air, and I got rid of the ramps early on. I'm gonna leave him up there until he falls off or starves, just because it's hillarious. Taking bets on when he'll die and/or leave. It's currently 9th Opal, 137.

EDIT: Clarification. The guy on the ledge was a maceman escort for the caravan. They left. He didn't. He's stuck and I'm going to leave him there for the purpose of laughing at him.

Merchants guards don't go insane, starve or thrists, as far as I know. I've never trapped one, but in 31. I've had a few that took too long to follow caravans and ended up sitting around being left behind for a bit and beating ambushes up :D

So my bet is "Old age", which can be as far off as 100 years or more.

He could be useful. Serve as a permanet sentry. It'd be cool to see a bunch of them, like some sort of bizzare gothic cathedral. Butwhere'd there be Gargoyles, instead there'd be stranded dwarven guards.

And thus begins my quest to collect more of them. :D

also, shit. The birds are back. When I embarked, I literally spawned across from no less than 10 Keas. The dogs killed 3 of them, we took a couple injuries, and my farmer grabbed one and started throwing him against the ground and curb-stomping him after getting bit in the foot, but they took my plump helmets and ran.

Also, the diplomat is stuck in my office, sitting across from my EverythingNobleDwarf, watching him update stockpile records. Every now and then I ask if he's coming on to me. No response.

EDIT: They took a few uncut zircons. hahaha. stupid birds. Although it's the price I pay for typing while game is unpaused. The sentry went into a martial trance briefly, and then I got 3 "Job Canceled: Interrupted by Thieving Bird" messages. Would've probably noticed if I'd been paying attention, derp.

SUPER DWARF EDIT: So the diplomat is following my Noble around. But won't ask to do stuff. I, uh. Presume this is related to the guy being stuck? I'm not a hundred percent sure. Perhaps I should stick this person up on the ledge as well? I know just how to do it, too.

Hahahaha :D

The diplomat'll be there until the dwarf stops working long enough to talk, or until someone else get elected mayor ( in this case, they leaves unhappily ). They don't seem to go insane either, unless they've been prevented from leaving fortresses after dealing's done, badly wounded enough to stuck themselves ( Unsure on this one, conflicting reports), or get cagetrapped.

Well, as long as the two remaining Kea are flying around outside waiting for me to lower my drawbridge so they can run off with my precious plump helmets, the, uh, diplomat's not leaving. Spring also just arrived, meaning the elves are coming. Time to build some elf-traps. :>

I've always had a passion on barricading merchants, preventing them from leaving the depot. So many ways to deal with them~

One time I had a caravan arrive just before a siege, and the guards got into a fight with some ogres. Two of them managed to dodge into a dried-up murky pool, and as this was before ramps were added to water features, they were trapped.

It took four years for there to be enough rain at once to fill the pool and allow them to escape. In the meantime a groundhog that picked a fight with a woodcutter had dodged into the next pool along. It escaped around the same time.

"Job Canceled: Interrupted by Thieving Bird"

I find thieving animals to be hilarious, if still annoying. They can steal ammo right out of your quiver. I've had it happen before; twice within the span of a couple minutes, ergo 'Job Cancelled, Hunt: Out of ammunition.'

But yes, collect all those merchant guards. Use them as a secret weapon to be dropped on goblin sieges. You just need to find some way for them to be unnoticed until the timing is right.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

THE ELVES HAVE ARRIVED

Now I just need to decide upon a proper method of trapping. I'm also not sure if I want the merchants too, or just the guards. And if just guards, need to decide upon the proper way of filtering them out, so that the merchants leave. Because I remember that the civilizations can consider it an act of aggression towards them if their merchants simply don't make it back to the homelands, whether or not you atom-smashed them into oblivion. And I'm more interested in Elven Impressment than Elven Sieges.

edit: fffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu forgot about the bins! Had to seize instead of trade, hope I don't have a visit from the Elf-claus coming soon... D<

Got an idea, web loads of cage traps across your entrance when the merchants arrive. The caravans will never path over them but the guards will. Humans, Dwarves - all make great sentries. Same with merchants. Sieging shouldn't be an issue.

Merchant animals and merchanters might path over them, it's carts that can't go over them.

Still shouldn't be too much of a trouble anyway!

That's why I mentioned merchants making good sentries. >:D
