There's a swirl of greenish light, followed by...

"TADA!"

"Oh I'm SO happy to finally meet you all! I'm the Master!

Now then, let's get right down to the business of MAGIC!"

"As you know, magic is divided into schools, spheres, hats, or any other number of terms to describe a group. It is also divided into levels, valences, hats, or any other number of terms to describe a collection of power.

Traditionally, there are five levels of power, with the first indicating a rather technical grasp and the fifth suggesting total mastery."

"Now, each level is traditionally thought of as having its own level of power in the form of its level spell. Most wizards research a spell of the appropriate level, then master it through constant use, and in the process refine and understand their school that much better!

Alternatively, some wizards collect nigh-useless versions of everything.

So, that's magic! I look forward to what you all can accomplish. And with that in mind, it is time for...

..THE TALENTING."

There's a bright flash of light, and you all find yourselves in a different room.

"So! This part's very simple. You just approach the orb, and then attempt to do something, thereby receiving your Talent! Your Talent can then the formed into your very first school, starting you on the glorious path to magic!

Oh and one more thing..."

"There are no. Retries."

Approach the orb, examine it thoroughly. Once done memorizing every detail, touch it, test it's durability, discern the sound it makes when you rap it. Circle the orb and consider it thoughtfully, spend a great deal of time thinking about it, perhaps too much time. "I wonder what the other students are doing with their orbs?" Attempt to use the orb to see what the other students are doing.

Grab the sphere and think about, oh, dwarves. And Boatmurdered. And goblins. And smoke. And dwarves...

-Letsee... magic... talent.... hmmmm. Saw a magician once when I was little. Pulled a rabbit out of his hat. I'd try that... but I don't have a hat... and a rabbit might be a bit beyond my abilities... So I have to try something smaller... OH I GOT IT!-

Herald places one hand on the orb and uses the other to try and pull a cockroach from the depths of his beard. Then delivers a melodramatic 'Tada!' just like the master did, whether anything happened or not.

[3] Hey cool, you can kind of see the other apprentices reflected in the orb!

Talent Gained: Reflection Sight!

Grab the sphere and think about, oh, dwarves. And Boatmurdered. And goblins. And smoke. And dwarves...
[4] A berserk fury born of boundless ambition fills you.

Talent Gained: Bloodlust!

[4] You snatch a cockroach from your beard.

Talent Gained: Bugsnatching!

The Master clasps his hands together.

"Wonderful! I'm sure you'll all be experimenting away in no time!"

There's another flash for most of you, and you find yourselves in a stone room with shelves and alcoves everywhere. Some of the shelves have books on them.

"Here's where you can research and attempt to refine your Talents into a proper school of magic. Remember, start small!"

Hide behind the orb!
[1] You hide behind the orb, only to realize that just means you've fabulously noticeable from the other side.

Gained Talent: Spotlight!

A quick flash later and you join your fellow apprentices in the other room.

"Excellent! Well, I'll leave you to it then! Good luck!"

With that, the Master vanishes in a swirl of energy.

"LOOK AT HOW MANY BOOKS WERE ONCE HERE!!!"

Try to find a book that will teach me how to make a held object glow.

Edit: No, wait, try to stretch that talent into something charm/performance based.

Step away from the raging doodles cautiously, then grab an armful of books, find a quiet corner and begin devouring their contents. (Figuratively).

[4] You slam your hand into the bookcase. There's a thumping noise.

[6] You have discovered DANCE MAGIC!

...wait, what?

Level 0 Dance Magic Acquired!

[3] The books are... strange, to say the least. You could swear they change when you're not looking, and they're full of weird symbols and terminology that don't make any sense on their own.

-Holy Treestumps! Doodles is flipping his shit! Best calm him down so I can study.-

Take the nice thick pink book on the top left, and use it to whack the budding berserker back to his senses.

Search the gathered books for references to books of more basic knowledge, search bookshelves for those books, keep all material neatly stacked, if available use strips of blank paper to mark various relevant passages. Focus search to magic that reveals and divines.

[5] vs [1] You thwack him over the head. He dodges by banging his head on the bookcase and then wobbling for a moment while you line up the shot.

[6] He's definitely calmer now, seeing as he's passed out.

[2] You can't find the more basic references anywhere! It's like it's a bunch of different disjointed topics all meant for someone who already knows what they're doing...

-Heh. Gotta love the calming influence of slapstick violence. Now then, lets see what sort of manly magic is inside this nice pink book...-

Herald will read the pink book.
