Spent ammunition and ammo stock piles.
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:52:19 pm »

My question is why my dwarfs don't claim spent ammunition. I have an ammunition stockpile they are set to claim and in options it is allowing claiming of bolts.

Taking a closer look I found the problem.

To better answer is how do I stack bolts in stockpiles what type of storage device do I use?

Dwarves will put bolts in bins, and lots of bolts will fit in a bin.

However, once a bolt leaves a stack it will never be combined into a stack again.  It's one of the things Toady has been putting off implementing for a number of reasons.

So your saying all the bolts lying around my fort will never be restocked into a bin? or will they just be put individually into a bin?

While I'm pretty sure dwarves will (eventually) go out and pick up individual bolts if they're not forbidden, yes, it does appear that they cannot be combined into stacks of [5] or [25] bolts.

What I'm curious about, then, is if it's even worth reclaiming non-metal bolts because of this. Like, I'm aware you can melt individual bolts of metal down into bars again, to make new stacks. But I'm not sure if, say, you can actually put 100 individual stacks of 1 bolt into a quiver.

Go put them in your archery range, and have your dwarves finish the small stacks on practice shots. It's not the best way to train, sure, but it's a lot less wasteful than just dumping all those bolts in magma.

What I mean is, if I give a dwarf a stack of [40] Iron Bolts, set him to use them in practice, and he shoots them all, then I later unforbid each bolt individually and assign them to him, will he put them in his quiver and use them? Or will they not fit in the quiver?

It's sometimes buggy, but dwarves will pick up and put individual bolts back into quivers.  So theoretically the individual bolts will get stocked in quivers without problems.  I've seen accounts of people who couldn't get dwarves to put more than a few in this way though.

By the way, shots fired at an archery target will always be lost unless you take special precautions to set up an ammo recovery system.  Something I've never done before, but it allows you to collect shots that miss.  It's usually done to melt metal bolts.

I've never had a problem with dwarves claiming shot ammo if it survives. Might be you've forgotten to turn off the order >forbiddened  setting for spent ammo. I've actually had some issues with dwarves still trying to claim spent ammo while it's forbiddened so I raises my squad holding to 300 ammo.

Dwarves will stock bolts fine and quiver them too, each quiver will hold 25 bolts/arrows, roughly, regardless of if it's single-bolts or a full stack of 25 ( or 5 of 5 bone stack. I think more than 25 is possible, but I only see it on migrants and caravan guards )

Bin, I have no idea, they'll take bolts fine, with 25 single bolts counting same as full stack of 25. There used to be bugs where dwarves would get confused using the bins, but I'm pretty sure it was fixed before 34. came out.

Granted, there might be new bugs in 34.11 since I'm still using 34.09, I'm waiting for "Standing on building tile" issue to be fixed.

Wait.

so a single quiver can hold exactly 25 bolts no matter how they're arranged?

FUCK

oh well. Time to start a full-on meat industry....

Bone them good :D

Bone bolts aren't the best, but it'll kill anything organic, eventually, though.
