make your walls fortifications, i tend to make some bedrooms and a dormitory, slowly converting the dormitory into more beds.

Dorms are a lot safer when vampires show up.

How?  A vamp getting seen feeding does not equal a victim being saved, does it?

It does allows vampires to be jailed or accused if justice system's set up. Then you can forbid the chain so they'll never get away, at least that worked in 34.09 for regular prisoners.

Err.  Here's one more reason why you might want to have bedrooms, not dormatories, whether your dwarves can see each other in them or not, and have enough bedrooms to gaurentee that your dwarves never have to nap on the floor, or go without a bedroom when they're ready to claim one.

Given ample free bedrooms, you can check any bedroom about 1 and a half months after each migrant wave and more or less snag any vamp you have at almost a glance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But why chain a vamp?  Why waste a useful and interesting part of your fortress?  Again, by having enough beds to gaurentee that no one ever sleeps away from a bed, you have the choice to create a bunker for your vamps which does not include sleeping areas (bedrooms, dormitory, hospital) but does include everywhere and anywhere that you want the vamp to work.  If the sleeping dwarves are outside of the vamp's burrow, then the vamp will faithfully ignore them, while doing everything you tell it to for as long as it can.

This method also protects your dwarves, without requiring one to die to give you a chance to catch the vamp at feeding and then chain it away.... that's a waste of two dwarves, both the food and the feeder.

That's gaming the system a bit, then there're that some fortresses never get around to setting up beds for each dwarves ( Mine tend to take long time, long enough for vampires to feed quite a few times if they ever shows up ).

And I'm pretty sure vampires ignores burrow when they get thirsty enough, dwarves does in general if they need food or drink badly enough. However I've not gotten any vampires in current fortresses so I can't test, and even then, I'm still using 34.09 :D

Chained up vampires can be put to work as bookkeeper, manager, etc. Sure it'd be easier to just isolate them first, but sometimes it's more convinent to just put someone in chain and keep them there after it happens.

Not saying your way's invalid, I plays somewhat differently and don't closely watch my dwarves :D

Your way's valid too, of course.  Just confuses me.   :)

what I do is the following layout

===========
=-----|-----=
=shbfd|Dfbhs=

legend:
|,-  open space
=    wall
S: statue, h: cabinet, f: chest, b: bed, d: door

so you have here 2 empty rooms and 2 furnitured rooms.

is fast to designate, easy to supply with furniture, and if you have enough staircase not terribly innefficient, while further reducing possible lag since every dwarf has storage for his/her clothes

They died for their fellow Dwarves. They will be remembered, at least until your Dwarves see a particularly nice statue.

I'm aware.)
Dwarfs are content for now, but only one ecstatic, legendary dining room with waterfall is under construction.
Not a single good thought about dorm or masterwork beds.
Half of the dwarfs have "Slept without proper room" thought, while i don't have any bed installed outside dorm.

I try to build large studio apartments for my regular dwarves (5x5-7x7) that have tables, cabinets, coffers, chairs weapon racks, etc. However, I always have a nice dorm room set up. I usually put it on the second floor of my dining room (which I call an "Inn) to simulate, well, an Inn :p.

The way I do it is make a 20x20 room and stick all my beds in it. I then resize all of the beds so that they cover the entire room but I don't assign dwarves to them (they claim the beds on their own). After that, I just put my artifact furniture/weapon traps with high worth weapons/engravings/whatever else inside the big 20x20 room to raise the value through the roof. When you have enough traps filled with 10 masterwork silver spiked balls and artifacts, the room value division stops mattering.
