I propose splitting Michigan.
Mitten and Almost-Canada aren't terribly great state names, you know :P

As long as we're not talking about saddling the fair State of North Dakota with our fetid pit of a southern neighbor.

Maybe see if we could get Manitoba to secede from Canada? Give them a chance to spin off two bits at once if they ditch Quebec too.

Add Puerto Rico, create Dakota.  Repubbos get even madder but it's not like it's gonna matter if the Hispanic population turns Florida, Georgia, etc. blue.

Spoiler: As for Texas... (click to show/hide)

Huh. Takes 2/3 of the House and Senate to approve it. Which means it likely won't pass through Congress. Latinos have become almost monolithically Democratic over the last 12 years, despite strong Catholic and pro-life influences because the GOP has been so derptastic on immigration and social services. Adding PR to the Union just gives Democrats an extra couple of electoral votes every four years.
May I remind you what happened last time you made a prediction on this?
Oh, and by the way. I would like to be the first one here to welcome the 51st state to the Union. Hello Puerto Rico!

WHAT?!

From 2012-2015:

-Puerto Rico, having voted by referendum to petition for statehood, but only just barely, is at some point from 2012-2015 accepted by Congress as the 51st state. The US has to change the flag again.
I don't know if I see Puerto Rico ever becoming a US state. The majority still oppose statehood by about a 60/40 margin
Uh, no they don't. It hasn't been 60/40 for almost half a century, and last time, in 1998, it just barely avoided getting a majority for statehood.

O RLY? (or should I say żO RLMENTE?)
It is genuinely odd how much that doesn't match the election trends. I guess we'll see for sure come November.
OH

OH

WHO FUCKING CALLED IT?

I FUCKING CALLED IT!

SUCK IT REDKING, I BEAT YOU AT GEOPOLITICS!

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
Not to mention the pragmatic aspects: where we gonna stick that extra star on the flag??

Mitten and Yoop (the northern portion is called the Upper Peninsula, or U.P. for short. Its residents refer to themselves as Yoopers.)

Plus, it would be worth tuning into CSPAN to hear "And now I yield my time to my esteemed colleague from Yoop."

@MSH: I bow before your superior prescience regarding Caribbean matters. I haz surprize.

Nooooo anything but that! Like give ND to Canada first. I guess that maybe annoying Texas enough so it leaves might be a viable alternative.

It'll give them a chance to edit it a bit and sell the movie again, though.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Any specific reasoning behind that or just some status quo bias?

I still think that "posting to watch" is just an attempt at postcount pimping because you can watch just fine without posting.

I think Puerto Rico could be improved. Maybe if it were shaped differently people would be more accepting of it. I'm thinking either a space ship or dinosaur.

Hahahaha.  They'd never do that.  What with all the oil field business up here.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.
