Anthony hefted his coil of rope over one shoulder and glanced around.
'A new life!' Despite the rather unpleasant introduction to this new job, he was glad to be getting away from his unhappy past back in the dreary grey of the city, replacing it with... The dreary grey of this station. Huh.
Despite it all, he was determined to be optimistic. Whistling a happy tune, he set off in the direction indicated.

>Head to the training facility, inspecting those around me as I go.

Bemoan the insurance premiums. Go to the Training Area while grumbling about foolish and backwards users of the imperial system of measurement.

You step into the virtual training room. There are two consoles from which to control the virtual machinery, as well as three open pits with no railing around them. The areas around the pits are painted an alternating orange/yellow, and the pits descend into blackness, you cannot see the bottom. One pit is labeled "Incoming Ore", one is labeled "Smelting", and the last is labeled "Shipping". Off to one side is a powered load lifter painted a cautionary pink. It has the words "TRAINING LIFTER, DO NOT PRESS YELLOW BUTTON" stenciled onto the front in orange letters.

The synthesized female voice speaks.

"Welcome to the UberCorp Virtual Training Chamber (mining). This chamber mirrors the mining environment as closely as possible while maintaining a workplace lethality rating well below industry standard.

I would first like to congratulate you all on entering the Virtual Training Chamber (mining). Of the last twelve crews, only two of them have successfully entered the Virtual Training Chamber (mining), so you have already shown yourselves to be a cut above the rest! Keep it up and you may one day be promoted to full Miner status. What a day that would be! We have not had a full fledged Miner in fourteen years!

Mining is a three phase process and has been greatly simplified by the extensive use of automation, but even these great automated systems require some human interaction due to the AI Rights bill of 2316.

Phase one is Location and Extraction.

Locating a mineral vein is handled from the Sensor console. Please keep in mind that only one person may use a console at a time! The Sensor console controls many functions, such as life support and configuration/maintenance of the reactor. It also accesses a network of geological survey probe which can be used by a skilled operator to locate new mineral veins for extraction.

Extraction is performed by utilizing the drilling platform, which is controlled by the Teleoperations console. The drilling platform must be carefully maneuvered into place over a new mineral vein, lowered to the surface, and then drilling can begin! The drilling platform will dig down to the target depth and begin bringing up raw ore. This ore will be deposited into the cargo hold.

Phase two is Smelting and Refinement.

From the cargo hold, the ore is moved via a powered cargo lifter into the smelting bay. The lifter is piloted by a crew member (one of you). The ore is dumped into the grinder for preproccessing, and then the smelting machinery takes over and automatically refines/smelts the ore into usable ingots while blowing the waste material out into space.

Phase three is Shipping!

Ingots are extruded from the smelter and must be placed upon the cargo delivery pad outside of the habitat area. This is done via the powered cargo lifter. Once you feel a sufficient quantity of ingots is ready, you may use the Sensor console to signal the cargo drone for pickup. It will come to the pad and pick up any ingots, carrying them away to UberCorp materials processing centers. At this point you will be paid for your efforts, depending on the value of the materials. You may use these funds to purchase better equipment for the platform, order items from the UberCorp catalogue, or simply sit on large mounds of money within tall fortress walls made of money. It is your choice.

This concludes your basic one-hour training course in mining. Please feel free to try the virtual machinery consoles. They are almost certainly not lethal."

The consoles light up, now active. There is also a map of the facility which, fortunately, is in a language you recognize.

"Ooh, sensor consoles!"

Occupy the sensor console. Turn it on if it's not already. Attempt to locate a mineral vein!

(Rolled: 5)

You locate a rich vein of Trainium Ore! The sensor console beeps happily and shows you a shiny 3D outline of the ore vein on the 'surface'. The 'planet' on the screen is a tropical paradise, with long white beaches and scantily clad native men and women smiling and waving at you. The ore vein is beneath their grass hut village.

"Aha!"

Wait for a mining colleague to occupy the mining station, and pass on this information, recommending immediate extraction. Zoom in on the natives in the meantime.

The natives are quite friendly looking. Right now they are waving to the 'sensor drone' which you are using and several of them are dancing around a fire. They're all quite healthy and pretty looking, and wear very little clothing. Their village is primitive but very peaceful.

I man the drilling platform and follow jeremy's recommendation. I start extracting the ore without regard to the natives.

(Rolled: 6)

You maneuver the platform with ease, pressing buttons like a pro. On the screen a great shadow is cast over the natives and their village as the massive platform swings into position. Its monsterous drills begin to spin and it descends rapidly, shredding everything below into a fine reddish brown pulp which oozes out into the ocean.

It strikes you that this 'simulation' is incredibly realistic.

The drilling platform bites into the ground and churns the earth, throwing titanic chunks of sod and stone in all directions as it makes an ever-widening borehole straight down to the target depth. You realize too late that the thing is digging so well because it is at 250% power. The green light indicating target depth dings and lights up just as several drill motors fail under the strain of digging 3 miles into the planet in under 14 seconds. There is a massive amount of debris in the area, and you see no trace of the village or people.

Fortunately this is a simulation, so after a few minutes the 'damage' is 'repaired'. At least it says "SIMULATION" across the screen. Its probably not real. There are some 'simulated' repair drones replacing the drill motors after all.

Bang Randomly on panels.
Both panels are occupied at the moment. If the current occupants decide to allow you to bang on their panels, that's fine. If not, we'll have to roll to see who wins.

There is, however, a training power loader.

About this time a platdorm rises from the 'incoming ore' pit. It is piled high with shiny trainium ore.

"Bah, Time is money!" I say to Anthony.

I quickly move over to the lifter and move the ore into the grinder.

Locate more ore and see if there is anyway of claiming the resulting ore and the resulting money as mine. Can it somehow be marked?
