Nobody using the stockpiles... Why? [SOLVED]
« on: October 24, 2012, 01:59:13 am »

OK, earlier I asked a question about miasma and food rot, and got a lot of good answers, but none of them solved my problem.

I finally figured out what that problem is once my fort started growing and space became an issue.  It's not only the kitchen that is leaving things to rot, EVERY workshop is clogging up with stuff, and no one is taking anything to the stockpiles.  Even when I deconstruct a building, the workers just leave it there (or usually one tile over).

I pushed 'o' to see if there are any weird orders, and it all looks normal.

What could be the issue here?

SOLVED:

The issue what that I did indeed actually hit 'a' on my stockpile pile, setting it to 'link only' -- I never even knew what this did before, so I didn't notice it was wrong.

Are your stockpiles full?
Have you linked stockpiles and then pushed 'a'? (thus locking the stockpiles to "take from links only")

Check these two first.

Are you using the right stockpile

Can you dwarves access both the food/corpse/whatever and path to the stockpile?

Are your dwarves assigned to a burrow?

Have your dwarves purchased the super duper extra mega ultra life insurance options so that you can safely splatter them against the bottom of your dumping pit if they continue to not dump their crap in the right stockpiles?

This is my master and only EVERYTHING but stone stockpile that I created when I first dug down and sealed the entrance.  It's huge and not even 25% full.  The only stuff in it are the original embark items.

I didn't link stockpiles, although I'll check later to see if maybe I accidentally hit link somehow.

Everyone is burrowed downstairs, but I checked, and the stockpile is in the burrow (it's right in the middle of everything).

They have access.  It was my central hall for a while.

Side question, I had the horrible bad luck of while embarking in a terrifying zone, also landing right on top of a frozen river than was to thaw in a few minutes of RL time.  Most of my embark stuff got lost (but dwarves all made it).  I have mined it back out and dammed the river now that winter came back, but my dwarves still wont pick up the axes I brought.  My axedwarf would rather go without that pick it up.
It's most definitely unforbidden an in my burrow.  Could the issue be related?

Are there any hidden stones on it? Check with d->b->h.

I had a problem, I tried to make Traction benches from a mechanic workshop linked ONLY to a stone stockpile.  For almost 3hrs, of on and off play I watched my mechanics disrespect the order, canceling it.  The message was vague.  It never came right out and said the linked stone stockpile, has no TABLE!  Instead it said something vague and unrelated.  I eventually found it, but my goodness, these new LINKED stockpile options can be good and VERY bad for game play.

If I were you, I'd restart.  I've had my starting wagon sink into a frozen river, also.  Its no joy.  I feel your pain.

I betcha that stockpile's haulers are bugged.  Someone is trying to swim in there and recover forbidden-access items to put in the burrowed stockpile.  The items don't have to be marked forbidden, if they are outside the burrow, they are treated as forbidden.  However unlike a REAL forbidden item, the hauler will keep moving in and out of the burrow, after the item, to get and try its boundaries.

It needs to carry that item to the stockpile.  I don't think its as much a stockpile issue, as its a hauling issue.  I'd forbid everything, then paint an unforbid, down through the burrow area ONLY.  This should keep them from attempting to pickup stuff from outside the borrow boundary.

Try damning up the river, next time it freezes into ice, then recover that stuff, if ya can pump it dry..  Or try

Yeah, when it refroze, i mined it out and put up floodgates in case I ever wanna install a water wheel later.

Surprisingly I made it with enough wood for some beds (dorm) and seeds and a little food and drink, and have made it a year (my original 4 military are all super-legendary now which is awesome and WAY faster than I thought).

I'm moving the fort now from the temporary sprawling panic setup to deeper more thought out areas, so I'll see if the problem remains when I create new workshops and stockpiles.

You might want to check the orders screen.  One time I messed up a macro or something, next thing I knew I had no wood or food.  In the orders screen, don't gather wood, don't gather food.  Sigh...
Make sure the pile's not set to only take from links.  You may want to turn off the burrow to see if that fixes anything.

Do you have idle dwarves? It could very well be that you're spending so many dwarf-years producing things that you don't have enough dwarf-years available to haul it.
