Or with large soles...
How would that help?
Actually, platform boots could be useful against larger enemies...
Large as in thick? Yeah, that could help.
But platform boots sound unstable...

I don't think dwarves would mix very well with high-heels or platform shoes :P

Someone who had worn platforms would never suggest wearing them in combat. Be a fun thing for nobles to mandate after they lose a debate, however.

What about creating small spheres out of rock/metal/glass (marbles) that can be tossed onto paved roads or smooth floors that would cause hooved animals in particular a lot of trouble but are less likely to injure your own infantry? Like some protesters are said to do against mounted police these days.

Or have small pouch with dust/sand which would be tossed into opponents eyes, blinding and paining them temporarily.

Basically, military could have extra tools at their disposal.

When talking this to extreme: Daggers for ranged attackers. Bolas/slings/shurikents for melee, flaming torches...

dust/sand

Brocken glass.

coated in poison, of course?

I think what we really need is Obsidian Shards covered in elf blood and Magma.

Seems to me that'd be difficult to handle.

Stockpile obsidian shards, cover in magma, remove magma, dump elves on them.

That just sounds pointless.

Otherwise the elf blood boils before it can...am I really joining this conversation?

I'd imagine that in fortress mode, they would be laid out via designation (with some other designation to have dwarves pick them up again), and just go on to inhibit the movement and harm the feet of any creature that walked on the designated tiles. Simple, useful, versatile. I like it.

I think there should be option of soldiers throwing caltrops/glass shards/obsidan shards.

I see them as in-field deployed traps by combatants (or fleeing civilians) rather than premade trap areas.

Also, caltrop stack item just laying on ground should work - because then we would be able to deploy them by flinging them with  bridges or dropping them through hatches.

Yeah, just have 'em damage STANCE parts when walked on. Simple and yet allows so, so much complicated stuff...
