Karma and you
« on: October 16, 2012, 10:14:16 am »

Angered that i couldnt breach hell since it appearently was bugged, i decided to slaughter the elven caravan and start up a new fortress.
I was doing quite fine until mid of the second year 50 elf corpses show up and brainshot my entire fort.
No chance in hell, my military took down about 25 of them but succumbed to the sheer mass of brain-punches at some point, and the civilians... well.

So how do you defend against that?
I mean without a zillion traps and/or an impenetrable drawbridge.
My population was at 59, 15 melee dwarves and 10 shooters (migrant waves had been great) and the liason hadnt shown up a second time, so what could you do against such a force except for "exploiting" the concept of immortal bridges?

My preferred method is to wait until their back is turned, then impale them with a pike held by someone else.
Preferrably from a distance.

Get a LOT more axes and swords around, some cage traps and more cage traps. Really, if you're having trouble, the best fallback option is to have traps, you don't need to have it up front. I've had a few forts where I've set my military to train in front, with a bunch of traps behind it.

That or just pump magma everywhere like someone'll scream eventually :D

This was in year 2, i hadnt finished my bedrooms and was 10 z-layers deep to mine out copper for weapons, not to speak of armor.
It just kinda feels i have to chose between being utterly untouchable or dead.

Traps and marksdwarves. I don't even bother sending infantry after Zombies unless there's no other option. The mood hit from "attacked by the undead" tends to start tantrum spirals in forts that aren't neverending joy-gasm ecstatic. Bolts are incredibly effective against the undead and have very little chance of inadvertently splitting one annoying zombie into three.

Magma just pisses zombies off, it also creates an ever-burning smoke spewing living corpse horde that will sodomize your FPS until the sun dies.

1. 3 digit-sized armies.
2. Many marksdwarves.
3. Dorfy contraptions.
4. Vampire soldiers.
5. Lycanthrope army Dwarves. (They're not immortal - send in loads or none at all).

Seems like you embarked within a tower and didn't take drastic measures.

Are vampires still friendly to the undead in fortress mode? I haven't made a vampire horde in a long time.

I haven't been as so heretical as to employ them, but from what I've heard they kill undead good and the undead don't mob them back.

Good, I remember in DFVD vampires and the undead were naturally friendly to each other so you could send out a squad of vampires that would be ignored until they were given an order to attack and then only bothered by the individual zombie they attacked. If that hasn't changed then one squad of vampires could hypothetically clear the map.
