What Mods do you recommend playing with?
« on: October 11, 2012, 10:14:10 pm »

So I just discovered dwarf fortress about a month ago and have loved it at first site.  After playing quite a bit in both fortress mode and adventurer mode, I now think I might venture into the mod arena.  I play both regular through Desura on my Linux laptop and with the LazyNewbPack on my PC.  So my question is, what mods do you recommend for both adventure and fortress mode?

Dwarf Chocolate

Seriously. You want it. It makes Adventuring so much funner. My elf forges her own equipment, and has a HOME built in a fort that she made almost entirely except for the walls, because of it!

Cassandra likes elves for their taste, Cobalt for it's pretty colors, and kittens for their cute intentions. She is incredibly strong, but horribly unlucky, and speaks with a rasping accent. She is white with black eyes. She likes dwarves for their hilarious intentions.

It's not that DF doesn't have enough for me, I'm just worried I'm missing out on stuff.
I have been sieged and I have been destroyed by Forgotten Beasts.   I've had a zoo, but I don't know what the circus is.

M-m-m-m-m-Masterwork!

Some other, smaller options are Wanderer's Friend or Fear the Night.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.  Now, what is this circus I keep hearing about?

They're just messing with you. :P It's an old joke.

My recommendation is to look for candy if you want a powerful army. It does what you'd think, except it's incredibly sharp, too. FAR better than iron, or even steel. Think... carbon fiber that can hold a badass edge. There's almost always candy on any given map (it's guaranteed if it's 4x4), but it's usually close to the magma sea, and a lot of players haven't dug that far. Don't know if you have, though.

I almost always dig to the bottom of the map and around the magma sea to get adamantine.  I don't think I've ever seen candy though.  Is it called candy or does it have a different name?

I personally would suggest any mod that drastically changes the setting, such as Putnam's mods.

Yes. Take ALL of the candyadamantine! You'll never get enough of it to go around. I never do. There are some tricks to maximizing the efficiency of mining/avoiding cave-ins and somesuch other hazards (accidentally digging into the magma sea, or following a vein up into the caverns above adn suddenly flooding everything you just mined out from a cavern lake (I just did that last night! lol!)), but they're usually pretty rare so just go for it.

As for mods, go for simple things that don't change much but fix some annoying problems. Wanderer's friend is popular for adventurers, as it lets you produce items on your own, whereas that is normally impossible. I also STONGLY suggest you get on the wiki and learn how to mod for yourself; it's a great asset to have, knowing how to manipulate the RAWs whenever you want, or create something entirely new.

I do have a mod I've uploaded that is a hellova lot of fun for adventure mode/makes goblin sieges and your own dwarves all the more fun; Spellcrafts. PM me if you encounter problems; I haven't updated the file in a while, even though I'm still working on it regularly.
