Change the contrast to black and white, bam, suddenly green 1's and 0's rolling down a black screen.

Dwarf fortress isn't written in binary.

That's not how it works.

He's a bit indulgent there, though the game is his baby and obviously he should do as he pleases.

A lot of the "megasimulation" aspects of the game aren't (imo) very realistic or interesting or fun or (in some cases) even noticeable, yet they continue to get plugged in even though the game can bring most computers to its knees.

And there's a strange fascination with adventure mode, even though that part of the game is just another crappy rogue-like rpg.

The real genius of this game (again, imo) is the fortress mode, making this game one of the greatest of all time.

How is that not how it works? Binary is the only thing written in 1's and 0's as far as I know.

All digital information on a computer is ultimately in binary.

Exactly. Just like all writing is lines on a background. Sometimes they form Chinese characters, sometimes Latin letters... Then you get into spelling, sentence structure, etc.

Anything you put into computer memory, without context, is an unidentifiable string of bits. In fact, the entire contents of your hard drive right now could be interpereted as a single, very large number. Or another, somewhat smaller one with a + or - sign. Or any number of other interpretations.

Everyone's machine's HDD contains an encoded version of (a truncated version of) the value of Pi itself...  Only encoded in many different and unique ways. ;)

(Just to reverse the whole "what messages might be encoded in Pi?" argument...  Yes, you might well be able to recreate your HDD contents by appropriately 'decoding' Pi.  Hmmm, I wonder how practical it would be to make a compression algorithm for (select) HDD contents or other subset of data, for which a decoding mechanism can be derived that is simpler-to-explain than the original length of the original data one wants to 'have discovered' by that self-same decoding mechanism? ;) )

Dwarf Fortress is a sequel, technically...

Unless you were referencing xkcd.

"Never made a sequel"? Toady still has plenty of time, and DF isn't even close to done.

There's a high probability he was referring to The Matrix when he said that.

...and that some people consider the two Matrix sequels (or certainly the third) to not be worthy enough to even be acknowledged as existing.

(I've said it before that they telegraphed the true (in my eyes) ending of Matrix 3, from the end of Matrix 1 even through to near the end of Matrix 3, but didn't fulfil that promise.  And I've heard that this might have been because someone else told the people responsible their own guess (similar to my own assessment) as to what the trilogy ending was going to be revealing, and thus they changed it to this one that we have been possibly lumbered with.  YMMV as to which was a better ending, of course.)

Anyway, that's further de-rail material.  Ignore me.  And choose the blue pill.
