Forever a crutch-walker?
« on: October 09, 2012, 12:42:05 pm »

I seem to be stuck as a crutch-walker.

I know if you throw the crutch it keeps you in crutch-mode, but I dropped mine. Noticed my speed stayed low (it should be 1600...). Picked it up, wielded it, put it back in my back. Nothing.

Is there any way to stop being a crutch walker, or will I just have to walk a lot to get back up to speed? And which level of skill is my original speed?

Legendary in crutch walking should bring you up to or close enough to your original speed.

My adventurers got stuck in crutch mode several times, i just kept fast travelling - dropping - reequipping crutch and evetually the reverted to normal walking.
Grinding crutch-walking to legendary is a viable option though

Actually, this is an advantage. Once you become a legendary crutch walker your speed will be the same that before, you will be stronger
due to the exp gained, and you will be protected against falling from leg damage. Note that a broken ankle is almost fatal in AM, since it means
you fall to the ground. With this you are inmune to that. And since you don't carry the crutch anymore you cannot fall to the ground
even if you lose all your legs and arms.
If even so you want to lose the crutch walking efect, take the crutch and drop it. Throwing or puting it in a container don't work.

One of the first thing i do with any (serious) adventurer is seek a crutch and train its use just in case. Although i don't throw it (too exploity), i just keep in the backpack it just in case i suffer some kind of injury.

I tried everything to lose the status, but gave up in the end.
My Strength won't go up as I'm necro'd. At least I'll be able to resist bone breaking or nervous damage...

I wonder about animals with 6 legs... how many legs do they need to lose to fall over, and does a crutch replace one leg or can they stand with only one leg and a crutch?

Once half or more stance limbs are damaged, the creature can't stand. So, three-legged human would fall if 2 legs are rendered inoperational.
Regarding the crutch problem, this calls for some science.

How does this work?  Do you simply hover around without any arms or legs?

I had a guy for a while that was crippled, crutchless, and a legendary biter.  It would have been awesome to stand up.

I assume that you float around with Psychic dwarven powers.
This bug is based in that throwing a crutch or puting in a container dosen't eliminate its effect; That is only lost if you drop it or lose hold
of it in battle. So basically you are supported by an phantom crutch.

I just encountered this bug. I started crutch walking just for fun and shortly after was ambushed. I threw my crutch at the first kobold hoping to get my speed back  :D. Luckily my companions were able to kill them all.
This is something that should be mentioned in adventure mode quickstart misc section in the wiki or some other easily accessible place.

AFAIK you need one intact 'stance' and one intact 'grasp' limb (i.e. one leg and an arm complete with hand/foot and intact motor nerve connection to the brain) to be able to stand with a crutch. I haven't been in the position to find out, but strongly suspect that losing the use of both legs simultaneously would still drop you to the floor when wielding a crutch.

Weird aside: when fast-travelling, you're assumed to be standing normally. When you get back to the normal local interaction screen, you will start out standing, and if you have no or insufficient standing ability, you will fall over on the next turn. The same happens to crippled companions following you.

Hmm, the 'crutchwalking without a crutch' bug is only mentioned in the wiki article on crutches themselves, but not in the big adventure mode article. Might be worth adding it, although i don't know if it wouldn't just get lost in the textwall.

If you do still  want to have a sword and shield you CAN [R]emove the sword/shield in your pack and BAM a crutch shield and weapon in your hands

To remove the "crutch walking" tag, equip a crutch and then place it into the backpack.  Simply dropping the crutch from your hands will leave the tag intact.
