worst embark location ever
« on: October 08, 2012, 12:47:18 pm »

I used to think no flux, no tree, aquifer, galena-only embarks were the worst.
I picked one with soil, an aquifer, an obsidian mountain volcano, flux-- plenty of galena and tetrahedrite, but I was going to collect goblinite.

Except, I didn't look at the civ list.  I have dwarves... and kobolds.

No towers, no elves, no humans, and no goblins.  I won't be ambushed, attacked, or anything, except by the occasional kobold, which ain't nothing compared to goblins.

What a mess.  UGH

You call that the worst? Worst embark is a scorching desert embark with aquifers on zlvl -1. And no contact with the outside world.

Though come to think about it, even then that'd be pretty awesome, seeing your Dwarves mill about trying to survive...

I'm under the impression that thats really only impossible if you don't plan for it at embark.

Now that I can put together a military and such, I was very dissapointed that I'll have nothing to worry about except titans and clowns, the former of which never bothered me in 15 years of my previous fortress.

I've read of someone who embarked into the middle of an alligators group.

If you let the Kobolds steal a bunch of valuables, they'll at least send out cloaked squads of crossbows and spears. It's not the same as goblins and humans, but it's something.

Just going to abandon this fort.  A little discouraged, becuase I was looking forward to building up a mighty spire complete with diving board into the volcano.

Dig an access ramp down to the caverns and see what comes up to visit.  A voracious cave crawler is quite a test for a young fort.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

You realize the in game civ list only shows civilizations AFTER you've made contact with them, right?

I assume you're using the in-game list, not the embark list, given you mentioned not checking on embark, although if you're checking the embark list and it's only showing kobolds you're probably best off abandoning

I've read of someone who embarked into the middle of an alligators group.

I recently embarked and an alligator was right near my group. It killed 2 of them before it died, wounded a third who died later on from starvation and dehydration (My dwarves too busy to feed/water him I think) and caused motor nerve damage I think to my craftsdwarf who nonstop flashed, but could still make rock mugs and broker and lived for a long time :)

But no, that wasn't a bad embark. It was actually fun! :)

Whatabout Forgotten Beasts? They come fairly often.

From my recent experiencies, even a badly trained squad of 6 dwarves with bronze equipment and 1 or 2 iron weapons can easily dispatch most forgotten beasts. Except if a fire-breathing beast breaches into the fortress, it's easy to kill them.
