You Are Bolo: A Suggestion Game
« on: October 02, 2012, 05:33:38 pm »

T+ 000:00:00:000

After an indeterminate amount of time...you awaken.

The fact that it took nearly 15.632 seconds for your psychotronic "brain" to start up worries you, as it implies that either you suffered tremendous damage, or have been deactivated for quite some time. A further 4.529 seconds reveals that you have been locked out from your primary systems: memory, sensors, locomotion, weaponry, and everything else...a most irritating problem. However, you deduce that identifying yourself to the computer will unlock the controls, allowing you to learn more about your situation.

What is your designation?

I'd advise moving this to the Roll to Dodge subsubforum.

Anyways...analyse status.

That's right! You are Unit XXXII/B-2401-GRT of the Line, named "Great" by your previous Commander. You always questioned the necessity of requiring identification to access a computer that you had a hard line connection with, but with the electronic warfare capabilities of some of Humanity's enemies it made some sense to play it safe.

It takes the main computer a mere .025 seconds to confirm your identity, and for the first time in...however long, your personality center - your brain, your mind, where YOU live - gains access to external functions. The main computer seems to be working just fine at 82.655% capacity, but you can already detect a problem with your memory.

You now have two options:
1) Run a Quick Status Check: This will return a simple, one-word result on the functionality of all your systems. For getting an idea of your general status, this is invaluable. It also runs remarkably quickly (useful in a combat situation), and can return results in just a few milliseconds. However, it cannot tell you what problems exist, if any.
2) Detailed Status Scan (choose system): A collection of more precise, specialized programs that will return detailed results of any one system. This scan provides in-depth results and can provide diagnostic solutions for malfunctioning systems. However, it takes several seconds to run for each system, more complex systems taking longer. Assuming you are not currently in danger, this is not a problem. In combat however, those few seconds can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

You decide to run a quick check of your systems. That way, you will know what to focus on if there are any glaring errors.

0.340 seconds later, you get the results:

Spoiler: Status (click to show/hide)

They aren't nearly as positive as you were hoping. Thankfully, you have a hefty store of raw materials, and by using those your onboard nanite system can make repairs and build new munitions, if needed. Sadly, no amount of nanomachine science can resurrect the dead. You feel a stab of emotion at the report of your Commander's health.

Now what?

Have solar arrays, fuel cells, fore tracks, radar, outer shell, and antipersonnel battery repaired, in order of priority.

((Funny, a Bolo means a cutting tool or farming instrument where I am, also works as a handy machete-like weapon, but better, IMO.

Also, I'm thinking this belongs in the FG&RP thread. For while this has the semblance of an RTD, it sounds mostly single player in the theme [Not everything with a 1d6 or dice system belongs in the RTD board  :P]))

((GWG: You got crazy lucky with most of these repair rolls :P
Tiruin: Well, it's not like GWG is the only one who can make suggestions. But you're right, this is just one tank.))

T+ 000:00:20:526
Determining that the most critical systems require immediate attention, you run diagnostic systems to determine where the errors are coming from.

T+ 000:00:21:611
The solar arrays (when functional, at least) supplement your fusion plant's ability to generate power; when the sun is out, anyway. Diagnostics show that the collection film itself is mostly intact, but the extension arms are jammed (4). The nanites aren't even required for this job, just judicious application of lubricant from the automated systems. The job will be completed shortly.

T+ 000:00:23:003
The fuel cells are cracked, and a large amount of reactor mass has leaked out (2). There's nothing your nanites can do about the fuel, but cracks in the casing are repaired relatively easily. If you can find additional fuel, your status will be much better.

T+ 000:00:23:978
Roughly a quarter of your forward drive systems are out of commission badly enough that not even your nanites can fix them, but the suspension arms are still functional and you manage to disengage the clutch on the broken tracks (5). They might not provide propulsion, but they'll still roll and support your considerable weight. The remainder of your forward drives have minor problems only, and are repaired.

T+ 000:00:26:000
The radar detectors are cracked, but the emitters themselves are mostly fine (4). The more precise detectors will require extensive time to repair, but the low-resolution arrays are patched up with a quick film over the worst cracks.

T+ 000:00:30:634
The outer shell isn't as bad as you feared. It is scored and pitted, but none of those markings greatly diminish your defensive capabilities. The worst damage is a relatively narrow, but very deep hole that pierces your starboard armor. This may be what caused you to shut down in the first place.
Your nanites couldn't hope to fill in the chink in your super-dense armor, but they can cover up the hole with a thinner layer of scavenged scrap armor and raw materials (5). It won't stop an anti-Bolo weapon, but at least you shouldn't have to worry about man-portable weapons slipping past this potentially dangerous gap in your defenses.

T+ 000:00:33:712
Roughly a third of your antipersonnel weapons (flechette canisters, lasers, ion bolt rifles, etc) are outright missing. However, the rest have simply been knocked out of alignment (4). The diagnostics program automatically re-centers these weapons and they become operational.

You estimate that full repairs (or at least, what you're currently capable of doing in the field) will take roughly 13.562 hours and 56% of your raw materials. What will you do in the meantime?

I have single-character RTD games in this subforum.

Attempt to determine the details of my location. And recruit more players.

((I'm not gonna worry about moving it back. It's still my first RTD, so whatever :P
More players can jump in whenever, btw. This will operate a lot like those suggestion games, especially once things really get moving.))

As the nanites get to work, you take a quick look around with your external optical heads. These are essentially your "eyes", but far more capable than any purely organic form, capable of detecting wavelengths from low infrared all the way to the x-ray spectrum.

You can see that it is dark. Very dark. In fact, it's so dark that one of your optical heads gets damaged by an unseen protrusion (6)!

Switching to night vision after that embarrassing accident, it becomes clear that something terrible happened here...wherever here is. Your massive form, bigger than most buildings, is completely encased by damaged and destroyed war machines. Some of them you vaguely recognize as Human, but many are obviously of alien design. You cannot see anything of your surroundings, nor can you estimate the sheer tonnage pressing down on you.

Attempt to locate any signs of life within sensor range. If this fails, locate signs of other machines.

((@ Joben: I'm taking some creative license with the setting re: repair nanomachines and harvesting. But while you might be able to use some of the material (assuming it wasn't too badly damaged or corroded), there's no way you'd be able to use it all, and some damage is simply too advanced for field repair.))

T+ 000:01:04:564

Your sensors have a difficult time penetrating so much metal, plastic, and glass. However, you detect signs of life between 50-60 kilometers somewhere aft of you (5). The lack of precision is annoying, but you're pleased that you managed to detect anything at all. You also detect an energy source coming from that direction, but again, you cannot tell what it is at the moment.

You cannot find any sign of active machinery, except the aforementioned energy source (3). You estimate with a probability in excess of 30% that there may be other machines, you just can't detect them at present.
