In that case I actually used to catch mice by having a bit of fabric going over the edge of a tall bucket with some peanut butter on the fabrics edge in the bucket.  You gotta make sure the fabric is jussssttt balancing on the edge so when they climb over they fall in.  That way they have a bed and food until you find them :p

That is actually pretty close to my next plan if he's not caught tonight.  :)

Day 6:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still no result!  I think he's to clever to just jump into a metal bowl full of oil.  Thankfully, I've watched enough cartoons to know the next stage of traps.  A pit trap!

So I assemble my trap:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Okay, maybe its not foolproof.  I like to think the mouse will step on the tissue, the tissue will start sliding in and take the mouse with it.  No idea if it'll actually work that way, he might just nimbly bounce away as it starts falling in.

Cardboard?
The mouse may just chew it's way out.

If I understand the design, the bowl of water is meant to hold the mouse; the box is merely a platform for the pit.

Depends on how much water you use. To much, and it drowns. To few and it jumps out.

Day 7:  Gasp!  It turns out my nefarious and lazy roommate isn't as lazy as I thought!  Turns out he bought and set up a bunch of mouse traps a few days ago without letting me know!  Thankfully, none of his traps have been triggered yet.  Sadly, neither has mine.

I haven't seen the mouse in a few days now, I'm starting to wonder if he got wise that we were on to him and fled to another apartment.

Oh noes! D:
Maybe, uh, I dunno... *thinks*

How about you get two rectangular plastic containers, like this and this, and set them up like so:

(Apologies for the crappy picture, I had to rush to take it)

Basically, the black dish is much wider but still just as deep as the other one.

The smaller one is set on the floor with one end propped up by a lump of cheese. (I used real cheese for the demo! :P)
Then, the larger dish is placed atop it, with the bottom (of the larger dish) balanced on the other one with enough room that when the cheese is removed, it will (hopefully) fall down to completely cover the lower dish.
I'm... Not sure if I've explained this very well. :-\ Do you get what I mean? This is all a race against time, now! We need to catch the poor little guy before your bloodthirsty cohabitant does!

Edit: Now that I think of it, these containers might be light enough that the mouse can just force his way out under them. Hrm... Perhaps you could use a large, flat book to rest atop them and add weight? That would take some tricky balancing, though.
I lack the time to test it myself right now... Hopefully you can work something out.

the mouse probably will not do more than nibble at chesse if it is load bearing.  He won't take it on home,  and that did look like a hunka lunka cheese.

Oh, you can't tell from the picture, but that was just a thin slice of cheese.
...That means it wouldn't exactly support a book or anything resting on top of the whole shebang. :-\ Anyone got a better idea?

Maybe one of those transparent plastic containers with a lid, upright, with a sort of ramp cut out from the lid, leading down to the bottom of the container. The ramp is only held inwards by a small piece of cheese, which is pinned to it by a thumbtack stuck through from the bottom of the container.

So... What happened? Did mousey escape his/her terrible fate at the hands of your roommate?
I'm kinda fearing the worst from this silence... :-\
