number of volcanos
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:01:38 pm »

My usual trick of trial and error didn't work very well and I'm having trouble understanding the wiki. Does anyone have any advice to get the maximum number of volcanos possible.

I don't have much advice other than editing your world options before generating (Customize World). However, if you wanted, here's a link to a world with a lot of volcanoes; I'm currently using it for my Drunk Fortress succession game. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6904

You'll need to play with advanced worldgen settings.

The VOLCANISM tag should be left at 0:100, but you can increase the last 2 numbers to say 400:400 or 800:800, which will make it more likely that a volcanic tile will appear next to a non-volcanic tile.

VOLCANISM_FREQUENCY determines likelihood of the levels of vulcanism.  You might set this to "5" (for a mesh size, anything other then "1") then 40:30:20:30:50.  The more you boost the last number, the more likely you are to get a volcano tile.

VOLCANO_MIN can cause world rejections.  You will probably want to leave it at the default for that region size.  It has no effect on number of volcanoes produced, only whether the world will be rejected if there aren't at least N volcanoes.

There's also VOLCANISM_RANGES, but that is also a "reject" parameter and will cause world rejects if set too high.

This is not what I've observed. I set it to 200 (the maximum) on a large world and instead of causing rejections, it seems to just add volcanos randomly around the world. I also had variability set to 3200:3200 for volcanism, so maybe that mattered? The biggest impact (other than all the magma columns) is that sometimes the resulting demand for elevation change isn't met and you have magma towers sticking up high above the top of steep cliffs. I even saw one appear in the middle of a lake once.

What? That's awesome. Build an outdoor scaffolding-type fortress around the volcano tube in the middle of the lake.

Just with the VOLCANO_MIN tweak i can get somewhere between 20 - 30 volcanoes on pocket worlds before I get too many rejections. I did max out the X and Y variation though, but I left the range stuff at 0 - 100 and never touched the mesh stuff or frequency.

If it starts giving you rejections, tell it to ignore that rejection type and carry on. You probably won't get the full 200, but it'll give you a hell of a lot more than usual.
Alternately, get rid of all the min and max terrain heights and let it pop down as many volcanoes as you like at risk of an uninhabited world.
