Most problems on the internet would be solved if we all followed the golden rule of "treat others like you would want to be treated".
Hell NOPE.

Terrible rule. If I can stab my lungs and be fine with it I shouldn't expect other people to go stabbing each other's lungs.
I'm not sure if your joking or not.
I said that under the assumption that everyone wants to be treated with respect. Come on man, I thought everyone taught their kids that expression.

That golden rule only applies at the most effectiveness when it can be exposed that responding to kindness with assholery can be witnessed, and the asshole identified and/or recorded. That's what makes the internet such an awesome environment for some. It's the GIFT in effect (Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory). To put it bluntly:

Normal person + anonymity + audience = Total Fuckwad

Reciprocity's nice. I prefer the old "And it harm none, do what you will." Just needs a decently robust concept of harm tacked on.

Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Those who live in concrete houses shouldn't either, because someone might respond with hand grenades.

We should preemptively throw hand grenades at concrete houses to ensure no rocks are thrown at us. It's the only way to be sure.

Kinda murdering that analogy. I somehow doubt the prisoner's dilemma applies to internet harassment :P

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Screw hand grenades, if all else fails: C-4.

Send a pressure wave and turn the concrete house into powder. Toss it inside and close the door and watch it explode. Send stones in all directions from the C-4 blast shattering the concrete house. Everyone will claim the concrete house guy threw stones. Deny responsibility, and profit from your handiwork.

no, if we must do to others only what we would do to ourselves, we'll have to blow ourselves up!
Sorry, forgot about that. Well, crap.

Quite. Explosions solve the vast majority of problems.  ;D
