Pig iron any good?

Does it make sence to use pig iron for armor and so on, or should you go straight to steel?

Iron is a weapons-grade material, as is steel. Pig iron is not - so if you're going to the trouble of making it, you may as well go all the way to steel.

(edit) To clarify - iron by itself is 'good enough' for most purposes, eventually you'll want to move on to steel if possible as it is generally better. Pig iron is only ever encountered as an intermediate product (and can't be used for a whole lot of stuff usefully, besides making steel), so would only ever feature if you had a dwarf produce a pig iron artifact of some kind.
