Empire State Building mass shooting

Very early report: 10 people shot outside Empire State Building, including original shooter. Possibly robbery related but nothing confirmed.


Gun control seems destined to be an issue this fall.  :-\


EDIT: Appears to be at least 2 dead, including the shooter.

Happened about an hour ago, most media outlets just now filing their stories. Won't be any good, hard details till after lunchtime or so.

EDIT: Heh. Front page news on NY Times, CNN, MSNBC, etc.

FOX News? Gets an alert line at the top while their front page lead is "Romney tightens race before conventions" followed by "Norwegian Justice: 10 Years for Murder of 77?"

DOUBLE-EDIT: Mutiple sources now saying shooter may have been a disgruntled employee who was recently fired.

These things seem to run in cycles. Part of it is that once you have a high-profile mass shooting, you're more prone to pay attention to reports of other similar incidents, and they're more likely to get press coverage.

Smaller shooting incidents happen en masse every damn day. Case in point, 3 people shot in a single incident in Fayetteville, NC last night. Barely gets a notice even in the local news.

It all depends on WHO gets shot. Whether it's blatant racism, discriminating based on socioeconomic status, or simply printing stories based on the room they have in the paper, things like this get passed over pretty regularly. My guess is that the only reason we're hearing about this one is because it involved a fairly large number fairly wealthy people in a national landmark.

Basically this. Not to forget wide media coverage of a shooting only encourages more to take place.
