Will falling objects hurt flyers?
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:28:52 am »

So, yeah...pretty much just that.  Does anyone know?

The reason I ask is because I've recently found a cotton candy vein (praise the miners!) and was considering building an approx 50 z-level 1X1 shaft going straight up from it before I breach the fun below.  My idea is to place about 5 retracting bridges on top of the shaft linked to levers, designate each for dumping, and load them up with used socks, chunks of raw marble, goblin skulls, etc.  And then with the fun starts to bubble up, start clicking off the levers.  In theory, it sounds quite amusing, but if falling debris won't harm flyers, the fun sadly goes up in a different way.

I don't know, but I would assume so. You should do this anyway because it's awesome.

Considering that a falling creature can collide with obstacles, i.e. walls or other falling items, during its fall, I don't see why it wouldn't work.  They would, of course, have a chance to dodge since they are fliers.  The real fun starts when they get stunned, and become part of the debris field!

if you can somehow separate bolts into stacks of one and get them piled up on top, wouldnt they land point first?  you could theoretically fire a thousand bolts at once down your vertical death-tunnel (alongside the rest of your general waste). it will either oblitorate the fun, or due to the collosal number of dodges, train up the fun to even more legendary levels.

Thanks for all the help!

Construction commencing.  I'll post results as soon as they're acquired (hoping today, if work doesn't get in the way of Fun).

Fliers will in fact be harmed by falling objects. A flock of ravens flew into the falling debris of a tower I knocked down and several were either injured and died on impact with the ground or got beaned with a falling stone, book, or necromancer.

I'm planning to dig into a cotton candy shaft, then as soon as the fun appears, send all civilians indoors.  The miner (if he can make it) will escape via an accessway, which I will then seal off with either an artifact floodgate or a raised bridge, forcing the fun to go up the tunnel of love.

I'm also going to put an artifact floodgate (I think I have two) near the bottom of the shaft, so I can seal the shaft off while I reload the deathpit at the top, assuming nothing in between is alive.

Well, you could make an artificial cave-in out of constructed rock, but I guess chucking socks at them to weed out the Spirits of Cocaine and what not would be helpful as well.

Pretty sure people have done this with obsidian generator guns. Just line the walls of the gun barrel with raised drawbridges to prevent sticking and have it aim into the smr. Though beating the hfs with your dirty laundry and garbage sounds hilarious too.

Be careful, unless things have changed recently, artifact floodgates can be deconstructed (though not destroyed) by building destroyers. Bridges work fine, provided they're sufficiently heat-resistant. Also, I've read that building destroyers can't attack a building from below, so you might be able to use a basic hatch (or the floodgate) if you place it right. Can't personally confirm that last detail.

Edit: Oh yeah, I can personally confirm falling objects hurt fliers. And when you release the circus, I'd recommend planning to sacrificing a cheese maker rather than planning for your miner's escape. Much safer that way. Hand him a pick, seal him in, and build build him a nice tomb with a nice memorial slab.

Sacrifice the miner and build a candy statue in honour of his valiant sacrifice to the fortress
