Scorching biomes.
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:07:53 am »

Anyone have a basic survival strategy for such a blistering biome? Does the heat have any ill effects? How can I manage without wood? All of these and more I would like to know, beyond the "Breach magma make green glass ever'thing" strategy.

Breach caverns, dig out a whole Z level of soil for trees. Avoid screwing around in the caverns themselves if you can. Magma is good. Some, not all scorching areas may melt the fat of your dorfs after a few days outside, so go inside quickly. This is good for killing gobbos. Aquifers are your friend, not your foe, if your embark was large enough to have a place with no aquifer.

Embark with plenty of booze and build a well linked to cavern water as quick as possible.

The well, underground farm, underground farms and getting all your gear and dwarves below ground ASAP are your only priorities.
Everything else is unimportant.

Some scorching biomes will kill some creatures if they stay topside to long, try that with the first best siege you get, just isolate yourself from above ground the moment they announce their presence and wait until they die of heat.

You need to embark with wood, most scorching biomes bear no trees so it is best to get a underground forest going for wood and you also should embark on a Aquifer for water quickly.

Also in extreme heats, upon embarking any small animals (Cats, Etc) will die as soon as you embark.....

The amount of malice in this thread is actually causing me some concern. I mean, chaining up mothers and forcing them to breed, just so we can drown their children to harvest their organs? Does this strike no one else as absolutely horrific?

1. Bring 100 logs.
2. Make nothing but beds.

And then it's pretty much just a normal embark.
