Adding Multiplayer/LAN to Dwarf Fortress
« on: August 12, 2012, 02:15:33 pm »

The idea would be to be able to LAN 2-4 players such that they could play at the same time.  Each person would get a starting spot bounded a minimum and maximum distance from other players.  Players would be able to send trade caravans, invading armies, animal forces, or could build in such a fashion as to co-operate with one another.

It feels like such a natural step, and being able to play fort with friends would be awesome :D

Oh man, that's such a brilliant and unique idea that I'm sure no-one's ever thought of it before! :) (/sarcasm)

Take a look at the search functionality at the top right corner of the page: multiplayer

Long story short, it's been discussed to death and doesn't seem too likely to actually happen. But go ahead and take a look through the previous threads. Some interesting discussions there.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

In my opinion the only way how MP could be done is that players play the same fortress and connect with mics. This has been done before but it lagged too much and was difficult to use. I'm hoping for a new and better version.

I don't think multiplayer Fortresses are a good idea beyond succession games. Multiplayer Adventure Mode though...

Why do people keep suggesting stuff like this? I sincerely don't understand it.

Dwarfhoplite, maybe, with each player being randomly allotted dwarfs or choosing them, or say having a variant where you play as a telepathic guild leader rather then a force controlling the entire fortress. MrWillsauce, multiplayer adventure mode would be rather easier and much more interesting in my mind. The problem is getting the world to sync up according to the actions of the adventurers and each others effects ripple through the world, though group adventuring would be first most likely, and i would envision it happening on private servers. The easiest way would be time delays, but then again when you run into different playtimes and sleep in-game, you'd have some nasty messes, unless you made sure everyone had to wait for everyone else to catch up to them when they slept etc. Then again, theres the option of having time pass at a fixed rate, but considering it is a turn based game that would be rather tricky especially if everyone didn't know what they were doing. In summary; something which could be done, but if by toady, much, much later, and either through him or mods if they have the necessary framework rather difficult to do. The best way i can see it operating is with a group of friends. This has probably all been said before, so no need to carry on endlessly.

A sticky of discussed incessantly is an excellent idea.

QFT. Not everything needs to be multiplayer. If you want to build with friends go play minecrap.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

The biggest problem, mentioned on at least 90% and probably more like 136% of the previous threads, is pausing. What happens when one player designates, or saves, or needs to go away from the game to eat/sleep/work, or whatever?

Multiplayer will be implemented in DF shortly after the First Person Shooter arc is completed.

Is that before or after the third DLC release?

Take a look at the search functionality at the top right corner of the page: multiplayer

The Search feature sucks but we can redefine it a little bit better then that:

Defined by the Suggestions Board

Defined by Multiplayer being in the Subject Title, located in the Suggestions Board

This should make for much more manageable searching.
