Noble mandate fetishes
« on: August 12, 2012, 07:59:54 am »

Once every season or so, my King mandates the production of bucklers.  I have about a zillion bucklers stockpiled, but he doesn't seem to care how many we already have, he always wants more.  Am I doing something wrong?  Do I need to put the stockpile of bucklers in his room or something to shut him up?

I've noticed that my nobles seem to make more mandates when they're not in good moods, but even an ecstatic noble will insist on some special treatment now and then.  Nobles mandating stuff isn't a sign of you doing anything wrong, on its own.

I say be glad your king is being cooperative.  He's asking for something easy to make and which can get your dwarves training in useful skills.

Hmm, okay, I'll be glad, I'm just confused why he never mandates anything other than bucklers.  We already have lots of those.  What if I atom-smash the ones we already made?   Will he start throwing people in jail if I do that?

I don't know if he'll react to atom smashing, but I wouldn't bother anyway.  If you want to destroy them, melting them down to reclaim the metal seems like the better call to me.

Nobles don't give a damn what the fortress needs, they care about what they personally enjoy.  If you check the king's preferences, you'll almost certainly find that he likes bucklers.  It's not as good as when a noble likes something you're going to want a ton of anyway, like Mayor Blob and his coffin fetish, but there are certainly worse things for a noble to get hung up on than bucklers.

No, he won't throw anyone in jail for destroying bucklers. Or trading them away, unless he's forbidden their export. I'd suggest trading them, if your military already has a buckler on each arm.

Nobles only mandate things they like, and they won't mandate by material anymore.

A buckler on each arm?  What for?  Each of my military dorfs only has one shield/buckler.  Is there some reason I'd want to give them two?  Won't they drop their weapon if I do that?

Edit:  Moved this question to a new post.

Be glad that it's easily produced.
I am lucky with my baroness too, she constantly demands crossbows, I have a gazillion because she always forbids the export of crossbows also.
My current mayor wants crutches, the mayor before wanted splints. As long as there is wood enough ... ^^

I remember a mayor who wanted ballista arrows, which are more painful to produce than crutches or splints ...

Yes, okay I'm glad.  Especially now that I know that this is expected behavior from nobles.

Just melt them back down (anything below masterwork quality) once his mandate is satisfied and all your dwarves have bucklers.

In my current fort, I have a leader who likes "leggings".  This will be wonderful since metal leggings give back 150% of the bars used to make them.

Equip all of your citizens with those bucklers, increases survivability in a tight spot.

my dutchess can't get enough catapult parts and backpacks. I probably could build 100 catapults by now, but my siege engineer & leatherworker are really good now ;)

before assigning a baron, check and doublecheck what they like. You'll be doing nothing else.

I had a baron mandate shields. Anything not masterwork got melted down again and reforged. Good practice, good trading (if I could). It was the warthog hoof cabinet that made a problem

At least you can forge bucklers from metal, and melt them, and forge them, and ... to make your king happy.
Since bucklers are not as good as shields, you can melt them all in the stock screen.

You are lucky. Nobles tend to want more catapult parts, or windows, and forbid the export of bins, barrels, trap components...

if that's your baron, pick a better baron next time.

Nobles only mandate/ban export items from their preferences. So the only way to get one to ban export of barrels, he has to like barrels, so he'll mandate barrels too. Never had a king yet, so no clue what they are like

Kings/Queens also make demands, according to their preferences. Often they have bigger demands than a duch/duchess, and also require Royal rooms for themselves.
