Which Bond song to learn?
« on: August 03, 2012, 02:51:42 pm »

I am thinking of learning a Bond song on the piano, just for fun. For this I would like to know which Bond song the community likes best.

Each movie has it's own song and you can choose from all of the movies.

Each person has 1 VOTE!

While the main theme is cooler than all the movie songs put together, it wouldn't be that impressive on piano. I'd have to go with "Live and Let Die".

Live and Let Die, or the Casino Royale one.

For Your Eyes Only is probably my favorite, but Bond songs in general are heavy on vocals with very simple harmonies. I'm not sure how well some of them will transcribe to piano-only.

Suggestion: If you're going to learn a bond song it makes sense to learn the theme, since that's the one people will most easily recognize.Personally I can go through your vote list and give you lyrics from memory for all but a couple on the list. But there are a lot of people who've probably never even seen half the movies, let alone would recognize their individual theme songs.

Are you going to learn just the piano version with lyrics transcribed to notes, or are you going to sing lyrics? If you're going to sing, are you male or female? If you're not going to sing, I suggest listening to the piano versions before you decide. Some of them sound awful on piano.

I'd have to go with "Live and Let Die".

Live and Let Die has a lot of power chords and some glissando that might not work well on piano.

Goldfinger

Personally, Goldfinger is definitely not one of my favorites.

You Know My Name is a very nice song...but it's totally made by the vocals. vagel7, if you can sing...this is a great choice. If not...between the vocals and the guitar...again, might not work well on piano.

Here it is on piano. Misses a lot without the vocals, but this is actually much better than I expected. Listened to a couple piano-only themes...and so far this one sounds the best. But it does have a huge pile of simple block chords because it's written for guitar.

I went with Nobody Does It Better mostly because it really is a piano piece. It also works as a great tongue-in-cheek lounge song if you can make any vaguely singing-like noises along to it.

While Live and Let Die is certainly great, I put my vote for The World is Not Enough, because Garbage doesn't get enough love.

The thing with pianos is that you can transcribe any kind of music to it. You can take the notes from a piece and then add these kind of "background" notes to it. They are a filler and bring the primary notes to the foreground.

This is the kind of thing that Chopin did, he didn't transcribe, but his piano music is heavily based on bel canto.

I can sing, but only if I or somebody else accompanies my with an instrument. I'm a male.

It's been a month. I assume you have it learned by now. Which did you decide on, and can we get a youtube link of you playing?
