If they keep growing like that, one of these days they're going to fit some people in them.

So, how big do you think the next one is going to be?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Big enough to come back to us.
Yep, a sample return mission would be nice.

I believe Spirit/Oppurtunity manages to travel around 250 meters on a good day.

There was a joint NASA/ESA mission planned to do this in 2018, but it was cancelled because of budgets cuts. (With NASA, the ESA is doing fine).

Anyone else in favour of a new space tax with all the funds raised going to NASA?

So what's next, science? Please say self-replicating nanites with no killswitch.

Petition your senators and congressmen! Send an email to Obama! Raise the budget for NASA! I want to be able to take my kids on vacations to the Moon!

Silly Ballistic Chance-cubes, there's always a kill switch if you look hard enough!

We don't even need a new tax, just a re-distribution of funds. 1% of the federal budget would return NASA to its better days, 5% to its golden age. Those are the percentages from the 80's and 60's, respectively.

I would be happy to give 33% of my taxes to infastructure, 33% to education, and 34% to NASA.

5% would be far more than it's golden age actually. In fact, raising the budget to 1% would be enough to do so.(At least in terms of budget.)
Year

1965              2012 (est.)

4.31%           0.48%

33,514           16,014

FUN FACT: Despite all the eurocrisis thingies, ESA's budget continues to be raised. (Note however that these plans were made up before the crisis and that NASA still has 3 times more funds*.)

*Though the ESA isn't the only space agency. Several nations got their own individual ones, and we got a sattelite control center too.

Odyssey's going to come around in about another half-hour for more data and pictures. I guess I've already lost enough sleep tonight that a little more won't hurt.

Even so, I want 5%.

I've seen some suggestions thrown around that Curiosity could theoretically go find Spirit, free it from the rock it is stuck on, and clear its solar panels of dust. Now there's an idea...

Well that would have an effect on the economy. Probably means we actually get somewhere then.

The American public perceives the NASA budget as commanding a much larger share of the federal budget than it in fact does. A 1997 poll reported that Americans had an average estimate of 20% for NASA's share of the federal budget
