That could just be my optimism, though. If Curiosity lands on a cat, all bets are off.
This is a very silly joke that I thoroughly enjoyed... carry on.

I'd lean more toward the second opinion. The fact that SETI hasn't heard anything is hardly conclusive at this point. Maybe if it goes another billion years without detecting anything it might be time to call off the search.

Shame there is no complex surface life on Mars.

Unless that's actually some of the best news ever.
I fail to understand how filling the universe with probes equals colonization.

Even then. The universe is quite mind boggling big, so big in fact that the chance of Earth being the only planet with live on it being near nihil. Sadly, the same counts for us actually finding said extraterrestial live.

This.

For an analogy, consider if you were plucked out of your seat and dropped in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Because it's so big, the chance that you would be the only human in the ocean at any given moment is infinitesmally small. However, the chances that you are the only human in any kind of meaningful range that you could reach before dying would be quite large indeed.

We either need to learn to travel faster, communicate more powerfully (and faster), or live longer.

Well said, I had some trouble organizing my thoughts on that point.

Anyway, if you want to hear about the landing process in greater detail here's a NASA press conference, that popped up in my youtube feed.

EDIT: Err, well, it's a compilation of a few videos, including one I think I already linked. Good info in the first half though.

Just over ten hours remaining. Also, PTW.

Apart from NASA's feed, what's the best place to follow progress as it unfolds? I notice Radiolab are doing a live event.

There is also this g+ hangout that is usually interesting. I'd usually bounce between them and NASA's official stream depending on who is on each.

What does it mean? If we're going to Mars?
