Shadowrun, BigEyesSmallMouth and the aforementioned MaidRPG were pretty good, even if all of them were more than a little broken.
A proper RPG has to be broken, or what else would the munchkins play? Also, D&D without wizards? Actually, that's an interesting campaign idea...

I shared all of the things suggested here, and after talking for a while we eventually decided to try playing Legend, because while everything else was interesting, it was "not what she was looking for"...

EDIT: Also, I'm apparently DM... I've never done anything like this before, any advice for me guys?

Burning Wheel is my favorite. What I like most is the character creation process. You choose professions and a lifepath for your character from birth. That path gives them certain abilities and skills. It's awesome fun just to create characters.

For me, when I first read the D20 modern source book, it was like a revelation. This is what D&D could have been. Incredibly flexible and open, but retaining the ease of use and balance achievable with a class/level based system. I've done D&D with d20 modern. I've done the Normandy invasion with d20 modern. I have done shadowrun with d20 modern. I've done epic sci fi space opera with d20 modern. It can be just about anything you want it to be.

Dungeons the Dragoning!
YES! I've GM'd this game several times, neither me nor any of the players have understood the rules, yet it's been totally awesome every time.

All RPGS are broken. Its not just computer programs that have bugs, its all things which get systemized.

We need to have a big, Bay12-wide marathon PnP meetup, where we play all of these games.
That would be epic.

That would be great, but I don't have any money, and I still need to fix my car.

I've been reading Designers and Dragons  by Shannon Appelcline. Its a history of the table top rpg industry. Its pretty awesome overall, but since its from Moongoose in house publishers, its a bit laden with typos. Every 'chapter' will have few typos, though they don't detract from the book.

I do wish it cover over hobbyist games though. RPG are a subset of the table top game hobby, and often companies will start producing, say war games, then go into RPGs. Or start making board games then make a RPG. I just think it could have been far more comprehensive then what it was.

However, for concentrating on just RPGs, its quite the eye opening. It really shows you how the industry is interrelated, and time and time again makes the same mistakes and often goes in circles. On a personal note, it made me realize that overall, the RPG industry is to unstable to sustain a career with.

And the RPG industry is often for its games and for its community largely.

That book was the very first thing I bought at Gencon last year.  I was at the very front of the flood of people into the exhibit hall when they opened the doors on the very first day, and it was right there in front of the doors I came in through.  It caught my attention immediately, and I began perusing.  Sooooo much detailed information about my favorite hobby.  The booth person informed me that they only brought 50 copies to the convention, and there were already four other  interested people next to me, not 2 minutes after the exhibit hall had been open.  Sold.

Someday I'll actually read it :P

Its taken me quite a bit time to read it. I started from the TSR and read forward. It is very dense with information. I'm almost done, just at the tail end of Wizard of the Coast.
