Emergency Happiness
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:26:27 pm »

I have made a big mistake with my fortress, and I think I might be about to experience a crash in numbers.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of having every single migrant come with a military skill as his highest, and instantly recruited them... As a result my fortress has 13 civilians, and 34 military units.

Being early on in the fortress, I set them all to train in a tiny barracks, 5*5, forgetting that they will become friends in that spot. What's worse, it seems to be an entire military family that has immigrated into the fortress... The entire military is either cousins, or some other relation...

Now one of them has a mood. He has about 12 cousins in the fortress, and 4 siblings. Unless I get a lucky caravan, or cheat, there is no way I can satisfy his mood, so he is bound to go insane and start much unhappiness within his family. What's worse, about the only source of happy thoughts I have is a legendary dining room. My cook is still very low level, so no legendary meals, and I am only just starting to carve out proper apartments for them.

What's an emergency tactic for stopping what looks like will be a tantrum spiral, leaving only the originals alive?

1. Lock the doors and watch them die.
2. Have them talk. Talk all day, every day. Makes them ecstatic after a while. Also makes them more susceptible to another spiral, but it's the quickest way to getting everyone back to ecstatic. Try pairing Dwarves off with lovers.

Lock the dwarf up tight and relocate your other dwarves, if they never see him again you will not have any problems. Just remember to not EVER let them find him.

Well you should have a few months since the start of the mood to get your emergency happiness rations in order, so you should have plenty of time to dig out bedrooms for everyone. Also check everyone's specific preferences and see if you can tailor a job/meal/booze to the dwarves individually. Also you can order lots of your stray animals to be butchered, but make sure that everyone gets a turn doing the killing to provide as many dwarves as possible with the "took joy in a slaughter" thought. Other than that, if you think that you won't be able to prevent a tantrum spiral, just lock everybody up preemptively to minimize damages.

Thinking I'll have to take option 1 :D Just had ANOTHER wave come, with the exact set of skills as all the rest... I now have a military of5 each squad, and 15 archers... The rest can take up stone detailing and other pointless tasks for now

This made me smile. The taking joy of slaughter thought comes from killing things in combat... Not in the butcher's workshop :P

Find a way to make a waterfall in your dining room. Just channel a river into it, then drain it into the caverns.

Disaster averted with probably the luckiest caravan ever... Had nothing of worth to sell but some rough gems, but it was enough to save a spiral :D

...What's stopping you from digging your own? I was expecting the missing mood ingredient to be silk, to be honest.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Just a warning: When you dismiss the squads to disarm them let them eat and talk, they will immediately take off their uniforms and seek for clothes. But we don't keep a reserve of civilian clothes right? So they are embarrassed and very unhappy.

easy enough to fix. just tell them to wear their uniform off-duty.

I think he sold the rough gems, rather than buying them.
What was the material, out of curiosity?

Also, do you have a statue garden? They're much more effective at providing positive thoughts than just a dining hall, as more items are likely to be admired than in other rooms, and everything suddenly becomes 'tastefully arranged'. I usually put a bunch of screw pumps in mine as well, so a chunk of the idlers are at least better fit for later pumping. It is another source of annoying parties, though.

An exploit is to periodically forbid a component that you have a lot of like stone every couple days and he'll skitter off to grab a new piece and think he's making progress. you can stall a year or so abusing this.
