Yeah, I read that book too, it's a kind of funny thought, but it was actually disproven by several other economists and the person who wrote the book later went on to retract the suggestion.

Those seem like really low homicide rates...

But I guess I am biased because I grew up near New Orleans where the murder rate is 10 to 15 times higher than that.

http://modiphy.dnsconnect.net/~nolaipm/main/uploads/File/All/BJA_report_on_crime.pdf
page 4/5: new orleans homicide rate for 2009 is about 520 per million

Note that I believe the "total counts" only count the municipality of New Orleans proper, rather than the New orleans metro area where we had annual body counts in the thousands back in the early 90's.

Yeah, the south generally has very big crime issues, it's generally thought to be linked to being next to Mexico. As a general rule of thumb, the further north you go the less violent crime you tend to see. Cities also generally have higher crime rates, so going by that logic it makes sense that New Orleans would have some real huge crime issues. This kind of thing is a really big thing for sociologists.

If warmer weather causes more violence; is that how global warming will kill us off to rebalance nature?

I have seriously heard it argued that summer in the South causes the murder rate to spike. Cause when it's 100F and 80% humidity and your A/C breaks....somebody gonna die.

Next to... Mexico? Louisiana has Texas between it and Mexico, so it's... kinda' far. If I had to wager for a major reason crime's worse in the south-east, it'd be because the tri-state area (north Florida, Alabama, Georgia) is one of the absolute heaviest drug trafficking areas in the USA, from what I understand. There are a lot of narcotics moving through th'rural areas around here, and some of the cities have... problems. That much crime (much of it organized pretty strongly, from what I ken) tends to radiate a bit.

And yeah, iirc we do get violence spikes in the summer. Considering it's goddamn miserable down here during that period of time, that's not much of a surprise.

A 30 year low by what standard? Certainly not as an average from 1997 to 2011. A single year of low homicides proves nothing; I believe the term is "statistical anomaly".
It isn't a single year!  Look at the source I posted!  There is an extremely clear downward trend!  Why are you taking an average over a completely random length of time and ignoring the actual trends year by year?

The homicide rate was clearly going up.  And now it is clearly going down.  It changed around 2003 (maybe earlier depending on anomalies).  The downwards trend is as clear, if not clearer than the upwards trend was.

Plus, again, you still ignore that at this time American homicide rates have been going down barring minor interruptions for the past ~40 years, whereas British homicide rates have been generally trending up.
The trend in the UK is now very clearly downwards.  In addition, the murder rate in the US remains a hell of a lot higher so I'd damn well hope it's improving.

Trust me, we still have a lot of bias here.  Most of us slant toward the left, if not by a landslide... but at least we got a mixed bag.

It's odd, because in Australia, the Liberals are the conservative party. So, basically republicans.

Then again, I know some very awesome republicans.

Bay 12? Not biased?
Excuse me while I post a conservative thread and get mobbed.

Also, can we either drop this thread or change the title? Clearly, this thread long ago stopped being about a bunch of people getting shot and became a place for people to rant. Besides, anyone who's still in critical condition after all this time is unlikely to ever get better.
