2 of 4 squad members don't have jobs instead of training.
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:53:47 am »

As the title explains, 2 of my military dwarves who are in the same squad as 2 other dwarves won't train and are stuck on the "No job" screen.

I set the alert levels, orders, equipment and defined a barracks with the "Train" enabled. The other 2 dwarves just train.
What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Check in their orders what the minimum training is set to.

It's set to 2  for every month as the guide suggested.

They are now all training, I guess they just randomly break their training?

No, see, if you set them at 2 minimum that means at least 2 will be training. The other 2 are free to do whatever they want. They CAN train, but only if they want to.

If you want all 4 of your dwarfs to train all the time, you need to set the minimum to 4.

However, I instead suggest making 2 squads of 2 instead of 1 squad of 4 if you want all four of those dwarfs to be training.

Thanks! It worked like a charm!

On the other hand, they only do individual drills, is this because they are all unskilled? I want them to spar.

You can set multiple train orders. This can save you from having 20 squads of 2 eventually. I.e. for a squad of 10, you can set 4 "Train 2 minimum" orders and 8 of them should pair up for training.

Yes, while they are unskilled you'll see many individual combat drills and demonstrations. Once they start getting a bit of weapon skills they will begin to spar much more often.

It also helps immensely to put two equally (more or less) skilled dwarfs in one squad, since then they won't waste time teaching each other whatever skills they are missing.
This is also why having one giant squad with multiple training orders isn't a very good idea, because you cannot control which two dwarfs will go to train with each other.

If they're doing individual drills after a while in their new squad it means that one dwarf was sleeping, eating, or drinking while the other was ready to do something. If they're training with each other then it'll either be demonstrations or sparring.

For multiple training orders, you can add a preference for which two you want to train with each order also

This is a closely related question, but sorry for the partial hijack:  when you have a squad set to active training, does this generate the unhappy thought about long patrols?  I feel like I've been seeing that some in my squads, but I can't tell if it is from training or from the brief times I send them out to dispatch badgers and such.

It is indeed because of the training and the dispatching. Once they reach legendary status in a skill this won't generate unhappiness ( I believe, don't trust me)

It's Great level that stops the bad thoughts. I believe they need to be classed as Elites or Lords for the skill level to count.

Thanks.  In order to overcome the unhappiness, should I set squads to not train every so often?  For instance, train only 3 of every four months, and than have a month of inactive?

Also, do certain personality characteristics or traits affect things like bad mood from deployment?

This is actually not because of the training. There is a bug at the moment that any military order will generate the long patrol thought, regardless of what the order is. Soon all of your dwarves will be constantly enraged by long patrol all the time, even if you are just having them train. I don't recall if setting inactive has any effect, you'll have to search for the bug. What I DO know is that there's a patched version of the .exe with a binary fix for this bug. My squads train all day every day, and it doesn't generate an unhappy thought any more than having a carpenter make blocks all day does. I *think* Quietus helped resolve the bug, but don't quote me on that.

I realize this is a thread necro, but people searching need to know this.
