First person mech games
« on: July 05, 2012, 03:10:23 pm »

I was wondering if you guys knew any games where you can pilot mechs and other exoskeletons in a first person perspective, preferably free.

Current List:

MechWarrior series
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Hawken
MekTek
MetalTech series
Steel Battalion
Blacklight Retribution (Hardsuit is technically a mech)

Have you checked out the MechWarrior games? I'm not sure if any of these are abandonware (meaning you can potentially get them for a free download) or not, but there were several published in the 90s. I believe MechWarrior 4 has been released in some form for free.

I can't think of any great exact matches, but off-hand there's

MechWarrior: Living Legends (only free if you own Crysis)
HAWKEN (F2P, but not coming out until December)
Enviro-Bear 2000: Operation: Hibernation

The two heavy gear games are pretty good and should be available cheaply. There is also the upcoming free to play mechwarrior online

I would swear Armored Core had first-person mode, but on further research I guess not.

This Mechwarrior Online thread has been forgotten but it fits the criteria.

It's free to play and has first person perspective. It is in Closed Beta but will change to Open Beta on 7 Aug 2012.

I once played that game for a while and stuff happened. Can't quite recall what exactly happened, but it was a fun experience!

Probably not quite what the OP was looking for though ;)

Pretty sure I played Mechwarrior 2 with a few people last year. Can't remember the name of the client, as it was not the base game, but there's a lot of fun to be had.

There are a lot of Mechwarrior - related games here - including a free Mechwarrior 4 clone, called the MekPak - here, although I recall it being a huge pain to get working.
There is also the Earthsiege/MetalTech/Starsiege series.  They are all pretty old, but are supposed to be good.

MekPak's not a clone, more like what's currently patching MW4: Mercenaries. Adds in new Mechs, bugfixes, etc., and it's still going on.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Steel Battalion and its sequel, but getting the first one, and its fucking awesome controller, might be kinda of hard and or expensive.
