My patcher is kinda stuck in this position:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What do I do? :(

Edit: actually, it appears to download, but veeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly. Since it's a virtual machine (due to my real one having an incompatible XP x64) which I cannot have running constantly (because it eats up all system resources) and the download interrupts if the machine is suspended, I'm still stuck. :(

I got this too, and haven't kept at it since. However, there was a pre-patched version on one of those tutorial pages, but it had limited bandwidth per day or something. Might try that?

Oh man, I remember paying PSO on the XBOX long ago. That was quite the fun game. Unfortunately, I never got to play on a team, and some of the more troubling boss fights sucked solo (I'm looking at you Ch. 1 area 3 computer boss thing, same with you Dark Falz).

The battle against a De Rol Le (AKA Bigass centipede) was just plain awesome. The music, fighting on a boat, and being chased by a creature several times bigger than your boat with a freaking skull for a helmet.

By far, one of my favorite battles in that game.

De Rol le (or something very similar) was in PSU as well.   It stands to reason they'll bring it back for pso2 as well.

I played some PSO on the Dreamcast, way back when, but never got a chance to go online with it.

Before that, I grew up playing the original, II, III, and IV (which is arguably the best game of the series) before it fell off the deep end with attempts to make it a pseudo MMORPG. I still have fond memories of the original PSO, but I heard they went to some sort of card system on the Gamecube? Gave me a bad taste in my mouth just thinking about it.

The card-battle system was PSO Episode III. Before that they had Episodes I and II on a single disk.

I actually played that.  My friend had it and kept insisting it was the best thing since sliced bread.  But it was really poor in my opinion.  The idea of a strategy phantasy star game didn't seem too bad, but then I played it.  Mostly vs.

There were like 2 kinds of characters.  The ones that were basically just the leader by themselves, but they could use cards to wear better equipment and were extremely strong, I vaguely recall they were supposed to represent the group the PCs were in in PSO.  Then there were the other guys, they could use cards to summon monsters nearby them, and they had those fight instead.  They themselves could also fight, but was nowhere near the power of a lone leader of the other group because they could not use equipment cards.

The monster summoning player basically dominated in vs.  In chokepoint maps they would usually win because the hero type had to mow through  a 3 tile thick mass of mobs to get to the summoner and they were usually placed intelligently to deal out half a dozen attacks per turn.  In wide open maps the hero type player would very quickly run out of breathing room and get surrounded and slowly beat to death.  Yea they were much stronger than those 6 boomas volfu and ivys, but when one fell the summoner would just summon another from well out of range of danger, and their monster supply was effectively unlimited.

Terribly balanced in vs, but I can't speak much for story mode.

I have episode III. It is the best thing since sliced bread. But then, I love both monsters and card games so it was a good fit for me. I was never able to play it online though, since I got it after the servers went down, to my eternal regret. I hear there's unofficial servers now but I don't have the network adapter for Gamecube.

I played through most of the Arkz story (monster-summony guys) before getting stuck. The equipment users were Hunters I think, and they were basically the PSO player character people. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the player characters in PSO2 are called Arks (アークス), which is interesting, but I have no idea how or if they're supposed to be connected.

Watching that. Can you actually read Japanese, or are you winging it?

I just recognize what various commands do from memory and reading various guides (if you were watching me look up how to leave a party, for example)

Edit: I ended up ending the stream a little while ago as the game started lagging in a way I hadn't experienced before. I'll try again a bit later, maybe.

I've been playing a good amount of this, and I am really enjoying it,  One of the best games I've played in quite some time.
I have about 90% of the game figured out, as soon as I reach lvl 10 i'm going to start a guild and invite all the English speaking people I meet,
I'm lvl 5 right now, and about to get my mag.
