Some help identifying headaches
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:03:46 pm »

This seems fairly minor just from the thread title, but therei s a reason, I promise!

Namely, recently I've started getting headaches more often. I have one now, the last one was two days ago (unless you count the incredibly minor barely noticible discomfort yesterday). They're not too bad, and for the most part, seem to be light sensitive, so hey, migranes, right?

Well the headache doesn't go COMPLETELY away if I close my eyes for a while, although it does seem to lessen, pretty quickly if I turn away. So... prolly migranes. But, what I want to know is, does having migranes limit/remove the chance of something life threatening from being the case? Don't bother mentioning it if it's a tiny outside chance because I will take anything to be intensely paranoid over if it's a medical condition. :p

On top of this, last time I went to the doctor, I mentioned the more frequent headaches. Now, here's the thing. I forget if she told me to mention the headaches again next year if they got worse (which they seem to be doing, I don't have enough to assume it's consistant, but), or if she said to call her immediately if they got worse.

I'm kind've on the fence, because if these weren't light triggered, I'd be more worried, because as I understand, consistant vanilla headaches are often more indictive of serious issues. But at the same time I don't wanna sit on my hands if this has a decent chance of being serious.

This is also compounded by the fact that headaches can be PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING and are hard to work out sometimes and blah blah blah. The pain really isn't enough to keep me from focusing on something, although it's noticeable too.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, is it likely the doctor is just going to suggest I start taking some kind of perscription for migranes, or is this something I need to get checked out now, because it could be life threatening?

I kinda rambled. Thanks in advance.

That description kind of sounds like pressure headaches feel to me. Can you remember if they happen during high or low pressure systems (it can be caused by one or both of them)? Does it at all feel like something is painfully pushing against or scraping at the back of your eyes? Do your eyes feel hardened at all?

I'm not sure what a high or low pressure system entails in terms of weather or whatever, but it's been really hot lately, and we've had an air quality warning, ozone and all that. I'm pretty sure heat matches up with one of them?

And.... maybe a little bit of pressure, but not really at the back of my eyes. Just kinda... pressure. And again, eyes might feel a little hardened, but it's nothing terribly severe, if they are.

EDIT: You know, on second thought, my eyes are kinda... pulsing? throbbing? a bit, but it's not painful or anything.

Let me see... sometimes the symptoms for a stroke are similar to the symptoms of a migrane (not even joking)

Though the reason the doctor was concerned is that migranes uncommonly can become debilitating (as I said it can be confused for stroke) and the thing is... Ordinary painkillers are almost useless against them. Doctors actually have to go all the way up to Morphine for the really bad ones.

There is not enough information in this thread to give you a yes or no. However, headaches are generally not life threatening.

the headache doesn't go COMPLETELY away if I close my eyes for a while

Try the following:

1) Drink substantially more water. Regularly. Before the headache. Not after.
2) Consume caffeine in any form. Mountain Dew, coffee, etc. Eat raw coffee grounds if you have to.
3) Eat expensive chocolate.
4) Engage in rigorous aerobic physical activity for 15 minutes. Jog, swim, skate, etc. Not weight lifting. Not a slow walk. Burn oxygen.
5) Have sex

In my experience, any two or three of these will stop just about any headache, even from girls who whine and complain for hours at a time about chronic migraines.

Do you have high blood pressure?

Interesting. Dehydration and stress headaches are what you think.

Anyhow I can only say what one other site has told me to do in your case.

Hold a cold wet towel over your closed eyes for 30 minutes.

I get migrines, bad ones. as in spear jammed into eye socket and wiggled about with blindness and mulitcoloured lights effects thrown in for good measure. Means nothing but is annoying. Nest you can do is keep hydrated, esp if in US with heatwave, avoid flashy lights, get proper perspriction on glasses and avoid annoying noise. Also the lose weight and generally try to relax things to lower blood presure. Lowering blood pressure helped in my case.
Your pounding sounds like blood pressure is up a touch, try to do stuff to drop it or take some vasodialtors to drop pressure.

Not necessarily. Caffeine, chocolate, exercise, and sexual activity are all known to act as painkillers.

Dehydration and stress headaches are what you think.

Dehydration yes, but the other suggestions are more about blood chemistry and oxygenation. Caffeine alters the width of your capillaries. Excercise promotes blood flow and forces you to breathe more. Sex and chocolate both cause the body to release endorphins.

Sitting in a chair staring at a computer screen all day then coming home every day to no sex and junk food, no water and no exercise is a very effective way to generate headaches.

For me telling the difference between migranes and headaches are easy.

Headaches are intense activeness and migranes are intense malicious passiveness.

Well... Excercise also causes an endorphin release. Caffeine is also more efficient then water for dehydration.

It is why those were my two guesses on what you thought it was.

Lack of water is the main reason I used to get headaches. After starting to drink at least a liter of the stuff a day, my headaches started going away. Beyond that, you can try meditation, as that's be pretty effective for headaches, too. Caffeine is nice for a quick fix, but it can also dehydrate you quicker, since stuff is being passed faster through your system. This can be fixed by simply drinking more water.

As I understand it "migraine" is a word that means "intense headache that apparently the general consensus is that they are painful enough to be distinguished from ordinary headaches but nobody really knows why they're different."

In any case, regardless of exact cause...again, my experience has been that pretty much any headache will be fixed by one of the solutions I gave. Not every headache will be fixed by any single solution, but I'd just suggest try them all, find out what works and do that.

Not sure what you mean by that. If you're pointing out that caffeine can be antagonistic if your goal is hydration, that may be true...but again, try things, see what works. A headache that can be fixed by drinking water probably won't be helped by gnawing coffee grounds. And vice versa. Simple example: a hangover headache will generally be helped by drinking water. In fact you can usually avoid hangovers in the first place by drinking water before you go to sleep. Whereas if the problem is that your brain isn't getting enough oxygen, drinking water or caffeine probably won't help you. But exercise or sex or even simply hyperventilating yourself probably will.

Do what works.

you can try meditation, as that's be pretty effective for headaches, too.

One small caveat: excess energy in the crown chakra, as well as blockages in the neck can induce headaches. In some cases meditation can cause headaches by introducing more energy than one's system is able to accomodate. Sex or masturbation will generally eliminate headaches of this sort because it basically empties out energy through the root chakra.

as for the difference in migraine vs headache

Migraine = problems with brain chemistry and or structure, new finding put migraines as related to a form of epilepsy, a minor form. Can be diet related, and can be inherited.

Headache = a literal ache in the head, could be dehydration, shrinking the brain like in a hangover or pressure is up and too much blood is in brain, can be cortisol that is stress related headache or perhaps its in the neck muscles and scalp from tensioning up from bad posture to stress.
lots of causes, main thing is if regular and reoccuring, look at enviroment and diet and see if it being triggered by something you can remove or stop.

dont be worried about tablets, bunch of common pain killers can work just as well as the 10 bucks a pop fancy meds.

On the contrary I mean caffine drinks tend to be much better at hydration then just water alone.
