Oxygen is interesting since our planet would be extremely different without it. Life can exist without oxygen, but it probably wouldn't go far past the bacterial stage (multi-cell organisms are highly reliant on it). Also, things like fire and metals rusting wouldn't happen with a less volatile gas in our atmosphere.


It's not much of a drinking game, but if you see a sci-fi show that A) has a planet with a hostile atmosphere, and B) has fire shown, they totally messed up (see: Avatar). Even if it were replaced with another volatile gas, the "fire" would appear completely different (most notably with color).

Oxygen on it's own is acidic. Also highly volatile.

It's not acidic. It used to be thought that it was required for a compound to be acidic (and that's what gave it its name) but elemental oxygen is not acidic. It is, however, bloody good at oxidating things, unsurprisingly.

The best element is carbon. It makes up life on Earth, is found everywhere from pencils to diamonds, and may even get us into space one day.

Actually, bacterial life has been found on earth that relies on a liquid OTHER then water, i'm not sure what it was, but it was toxic for all "normal" life.

Basically any Actinide is the best element.
