Those things aren't easy to get.  You need a two year apprenticeship first IIRC.  Try finding someone who feels like giving you an apprenticeship in this economy.

I get the feeling I'm going to have to address this at some point with an article on it or something. I suspect it will split clients right down the middle, no matter how neutral I write it. Worse, everyone will hate me, because the conservatives will settle for nothing less than a condemnation; and the liberals will settle for nothing less than total praise.

My main concern is whether or not health insurance rates in general will skyrocket to compensate for the multitude of ways they're no longer able to subtly screw you over once this thing goes into effect. I hope that doesn't happen.

I dunno, my father says theres a huge need for HVAC right now but the pay sucks and you will be in brutal conditions most of the time.

Well true but the law is suppose to cap that too

Your captive to the insurance market as a whole, not to any one company. If one company decided to do that, then the others would benefit from increased business, since every rational person would switch to another provider, all else being equal. They are going to work to maximize their total profit, by having as many people paying the highest price possible. They would want to lower prices if they were able to in order to take business away from competitors and make more money through a larger customer base.

It would work exactly the same way any other market for an essential good would work (it will be an essential good because  you'll be forced to buy it). Food prices aren't insanely high because then you would lose your customer base. Same goes for auto insurance, you're forced to buy that and prices aren't insanely high because then you would just switch to a different provider.

And if you don't mind getting deployed to God knows where and getting shot at. And I'd wager that a lot of the HVAC-type stuff for facility maintenance is actually outsourced these days. MANY of the basic civilian life skills that the military used to teach are no longer available, outside of electronics and first aid. There are very few "Army cooks" anymore, because the vast majority of food service at Army facilities (even overseas) has been outsourced to private contractors. Even base security was (up until last year) mostly private contractors. The only reason they're not anymore is that Congress passed legislation in the wake of 9/11 saying that all military facility guards had to be Federal employees, with a 10-year grace period. Most facilities just kept the contractors for the full 10 years.

As to the mentality that you have to have a degree to succeed? It's borne out by multiple studies and statistics. In 2009, when the national unemployment rate was hovering between 8 and 9 percent, the rate for working-age people with only a high school education was 22.5 percent. Regardless of whether you really NEED the degree to do your job or not, employers increasingly recognize an Associate's Degree as the minimum acceptable norm, with an implicit assumption that a potential applicant without a degree is somehow deficient or lazy. Not saying that's fair, but it is what it is.


But yeah, this is divergent from the topic and probably better off transplanted to the Progressive thread.
