Just a tooth in the mouth. It was believed in medieval times that it was connected to the eye. The theory is gone, but the name stuck. I see this all the time. Stil, why is it always dogs?

That explains so much.

I had this insane image in my head of a dog shooting teeth out of its eyes at the minotaur who was wailing on it...

We get this question a lot here, and, contrary to popular belief, a dog's eye tooth does not actually reside in its mouth at all. You see, dogs in Dwarf Fortress have a row of sharp little teeth above their eyes in place of eyelashes. These are used as a defensive weapon against eye gouging, a common method of attack in the realm of Dwarf Fortress. A "Dog left eye tooth" is simply one of these teeth from above the dog's left eye.

The more you know.

That explanation actually makes more sense, since the dog in question did indeed get gouged in the left eye 7 times, before blinking the dust.

The name isn't scientific (very rarely used in papers, if at all), it's popular, I've changed my "eye tooth" to "(left/right) upper canine", you can do it in body_default.txt. Or leave it as it is.

I'm more worried about my dwarf who grabbed the goblin maceman's lower right back tooth with his upper left arm

Calling it a "dogs canine tooth" would also sound pretty confusing. It's a dog - surely they're all canine teeth!
