Games with "Coin"?
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:42:23 pm »

So I like this idea.  A bag full of gold.  Not even if it's incredibly useful or anything, but I like coins.  I love when my character's inventory includes Gold Coin [300] and other delicious monies.

Any good games with this sort of hoarder option?  Ideally with the ability to use it eventually, like buy a small city or something.  I like Mount and Blade with the way that you can loot villages and stockpile some massive funds, though owning a city is generally a little lame due to the lack of upgrade options.  DF's own Adventure Mode sees me stealing EVERYTHING from a bandit camp and selling it, and getting a sack full of gold.

I am now imagining a game where your objective is to go from a small business to a global corporate hegemony that manipulates entire nations for profit.

Play Morrowind. Pave roads with gold coins.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

In elder scrolls 2, gold is an object you carry around with you and actually has weight. You can buy houses and boats but those are mostly useless... except maybe the boat to an extent.

Runescape actually, I haven't played in six or so years but I remember it being a gold whore's dream, everything translated into GOOOOLD!!!

As far as getting money to actually do stuff, try one of warband's many mods, I believe floris and brytenwalda add more content.

Diablo 1. Enjoy having your inventory filled up with stack after stack of 5000 gold, multiply that by x2 (I think) if you got the gold charm amulet. I remember a friend of mine used to store his excess gold around a tree just outside the church. Twas paved with gold I tells you.

Also, for simply making money; Recettear. Capitalism ho!

Yeah, I used to leave my gold lying on the floor in the middle of town square, of course you lose it all if you get into a multi player game. Diablo 1 really shows its roguelike roots a lot more than the other games.

ADOM, play as a merchant. Not only can you get loads of gold, as a merchant they weight much less due to class feats, and you can use them as decent throwing weapons.

I loved the coins and making money in Ultima Online. PILES AND PILES OF COINS. Dropping by my shop every now and then, restocking, raking in shitloads of cash. Or just go out on the street and peddle my wares. At some point I even had whole guilds as steady customers, for having reasonably priced and quality goods (mage stuff, runebooks etc).

Gothic series had more coin than you can imagine. Also your pockets were endless.

The 3rd and 4th Gothic games sucked balls, though.

I used to love crippling my DF games by producing tons of coins and stacking in a vault room. It was always worth the FPS death.

This is the most weirdly specific request I've seen in a very long time.

@ G-Flex: I wouldn't tempt fate.

Hm, I noticed that Diablo really only covered one half of your request.

Games with stuff to buy with your hard earned moolah:

Neverwinter Nights 2 has upgrades for a keep you get. Though that's near the end of the game.

Ultima VII has a carriage and boat you can buy to travel around in. I'm not sure if there's housing. Ultima VII also has you carry your money around in a backpack or a sack within a backpack, and I believe you need an abacus to count it.

Fable 3 has you amassing huge amounts of gold, all stored in a nice, big vault (You can climb up it even). You can also spend it on housing to either own or rent out. You can buy shops and collect daily income from them. You have to spend money to repair the houses and setting the tax level influences your alignment.

I'll see if I can think of any others.
