Toady is like me playing skyrim, i always go "i'm going to do a main quest!"
but then i see a bandit hideout.
or i get a sidequest.

What main quest?

I 'ardly know 'er!

(I haven't even went to the Riverwood Inn yet and now I'm in the Dark Brotherhood!)

That's how I tried to do it. Eventually I became insistant on getting those greybeards to give me the locations of the word walls, so I had to go through with it partway. Then it caem to the point where I said "Well, I can either do the main quest, or break my moral code with this other quest that I couldn't decline..." So I did both!

Quote from: Toady One
Goblins arrive at their target village/town now and split up into several groups which will very soon be causing trouble. The mayhem has to work at each of the different resolutions (on the other side of the world, with the abstract site map loaded, and with the actual tiles loaded), though I doubt I'll work through the tile resolution problems fully now, since buildings are going to be demolished and I don't want to get bogged down. Once buildings are being destroyed and civilians are being harried, I'm going to have the enemies camp out for a while with some survivors lingering so you can figure out what's going on and have a bit of an adventure involvement with it. I think the enemy encampments will probably end up being the first places infiltrated (as in the hero role dev pages), and that we're going to move directly toward that once the camp exists, and then we'll dial back the goblin rampage a bit at times and also get back to infiltrating bandit camps.

Awesomeness. Thoughts?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I think Mr. Frodo is going to be most displeased when he sees what's become of the Shire in his absence.

As usual, the game gets more and more awesome with each dev update.  Unfortunately, it's starting to really put into perspective how much work is going into this release.  I'm not holding my breath on a release this year.  :(

For me the biggest advancement in DF to come is when the world becomes active while your playing Fortress or adventure mode i.e Towns grow / armies move / wars start and end / bandits roam.

Not sure how far off that is but from Toady's notes it appears that its not going to show until around 0.5, the scariest part is I can picture myself at age 40 ( Im 23 now ) explaining to my wife and kids why DF 1.0  is the coolest thing ever, Also maybe my Toady crayon art will be super valuable in 100 yrs time, like a picasso.

The Sock ?

Also, you shouldn't treat groups as merely sets because you would have a tendency for them to include only the information contained in the elements which compose them. Groups ARE objects, with sets of members (and yes, some fuzzy logic will most likely be required for things such as "loyalty" or "likeness of objectives").
The reason why is, there is some information about the group that is not its members nor its name. For example, objectives, ethics. Even if you could derive the new objectives or ethics of a group from statistics, from a programmation point of view it makes more sense to have a group use the same interface as an individual, in the case of a friend that ask you not to do something versus your religion that asks you to do it.
Plus groups like individuals have things they overall like or dislike, objectives, relations to other entities and can be part of other groups. Even if the inner working of a group's mind are partly derived from the minds of its members, there is benefit in regarding them as objects with sets.

(Plus, but it's quite impractical for DF purposes, some would argue individuals are themselves sets of simpler entities. cf. Minsky's society of mind)

Yeah I was like "wtf?" when I've seen the tile of the topic...Toady is awesome, but the development of DF is extremely slow, since it's a 1 man project. I also doubt that we gonna have a major release this year.  :-\ [...wel depends on what is on Toady's to-do list, bu AFAIK tons of stuff...]

Even if it's just a 1-man project and toady is doing a lot of optimization the development of better processors and ram can't keep up with df's increasing need for resources as features get added.

Truly amazing how a 1-man show (coding wise, let's not discount Zach who is ALSO invaluable in the development) can bring even modern computers to their knees.  One of these days, I'm going to have to install a Gray SC to run the finished version at full spec!  Kids' college fund be damned!!

I wonder if you can still buy superpowered single core processors?

There are probably specialist architectures where you can get single core processors optimized for one thing or another, but I doubt you'd find anything for general purpose computers these days that isn't multicore and is still worth using.  The best Pentium IV (or AMD equivalent) is going to suck royally compared to a modern processor obviously, even for single threaded things.

It would be interesting if there was a specialized processor like that which had a C++ compiler that would compile DF, and presumably a Linux distro that DF could run under.

Maybe we could help the situation along by building an architecture with absurd amounts of cache, given that cache is usually the FPS bottleneck of DF (or so I've heard.)
