My brain just conected two dots

This one: http://yudkowsky.net/other/fiction/npc

and this one:
Quote
Toady One I've gotten it up to a point where it tracks conflicts and the game has a new system in place for determining critter actions, goals and current states of mind.  I've mostly been banging out how it should be set up to allow for things like army AI and dwarven job priorities without having to scrap it all again.  That's not to say it'll be quick to write those updates now, but it's more straightforward, anyway.  Right now the new stuff just applies to what I've been working on, so that critters will generally feel terror when people are trying to kill them, unless they are oddly constituted, and in order to continue fighting they need to master their fear.  Failure to master emotional states leads to forced actions like running away or attacking in rage, although running away can also occur as a rational action if the critter gets to that stage. Entering a state of terror or being in a state of terror for a while also works as a stressor that can have longer-term personality changes/effects (which'll also be the rewrite for dwarf-mode happiness/tantrums etc. as we re-interpret the various stressors in the thought list there).  They won't defend themselves at all if they don't have basic aspirations like staying alive (alternatives might need to be found for possibly mindless critters like gabbro men, although they'll probably initiate whatever conflict they are involved in for whatever inscrutable reason).  It's a continuing process, but I should be moving on to surrender soonish.

Neat.  I'd read Eliezer S. Yudkowsky's Three Worlds Collide before and was very impressed (not just humans in alien bodies, but truly alien minds).  Now I'm even more impressed by him.

On one hand, awesome prank, for obvious reasons.

On the other hand, it's really f****d up to mess with people's emotions like that. That's among the lowest of the low things you can do to someone.

That was a great read, thanks. Sadly the final part is very weak. I don't know when were this written but for the prank to be possible the games industry would need to be very different of what it is or will be in the near future, so it completely broke my suspension of disbelief.

The whole story : trolololo. Also, hurray for BG2 reference.

So pranking is just as bad as raping or killing ?

This is the most advanced form of mindfuck possible: Making people wonder whether any form of Plato's Cave exists.
Also, it's only pranking if the prankee gets to know that he was pranked.

By the way: I've suddenly realized that I like getting pranked/mindfucked more than I like pranking.

Me after pranking someone: Yeah, you fell for it. That's what I expected. I feel sorta bad for you.
Me after getting pranked: Holy shit I GOT PRANKED. You have blown my mind, and it was fucking AWESOME!

So yeah, I'm probably addicted to having my mind blown. That's probably the main reason why I'm on the Internet.

Alright, that was a pretty entertaining read. I laughed. Even if it's a real dick move on her part, if my girlfriend did anything remotely as entertaining, I would only be able to hug her and laugh.

Anyway, I do see how this is connected. I actually wonder if Toady will be able to make serious advances in the field of video game AI, or AI in general. He's already on that path, and making it all a living, breathing world that keeps pace with the player is a part of his goals. Some form of "radiant AI" that is actually "radiant" or in any way responsive, even if it's just actively choosing loyalties and developing a little schedule of it's own to play out in-game, is a pretty big deal.

Situation: You're walking around somewhere with your gf in rl and then you see someone laying around in a pool of blood, nearly dead. Your girl goes all like "omg we need to help him" and then you say "Don’t worry, babe, he's only a NPC". Imagine her look.  :D

That is a fantastic story.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

...On the topic of the original post, I can see how this would be a great update. Now that a creature can juggle  independent motivations, we can manipulate them. An interaction that removes self-preservation and hightens anger and protectiveness of others would make a very natural rage inducer, etc.
