Username Permanence
« on: June 17, 2012, 10:11:10 pm »

I was wondering about the frequency in which people change their username, so here we go.

I myself have used the name MetalSlimeHunt for as long as I have had an internet identity, and see no need to change it now or in the foreseeable future. It's kind of silly in retrospect, but I've used it for almost a decade now and thus care not. If someone were to somehow identify me on the street and yell "Hey, MetalSlimeHunt!" I'd almost certainly turn and look as if they'd said my real name.

Hmm...

I guess I've changed changed four times in the history of the internet. Not counting game names of course, and a couple still get occasional use - Tobias and Kiera are names I go by in other places, so I'm not sure if they count.

I used to use "Qwertyuiopas" everywhere, until I was old enough to realize how bland and generic it was. These days, this is the only place that I don't use Uristqwerty (similar, but google found exactly 0 references to it at the time, and I doubt anyone else started using it since (unless they were intentionally stealing it)), and only since I don't know if there is a way to change it here (and if there was, I'd probably be too lazy to do so).

So that would be one change, with no intention to ever do so again.

I've got a few I use for different purposes (usually more game related than forum, though) and a couple backups if someone's nabbed one of those, plus a few "standard throwaways" (Noon Yah, ferex) for transient junk. I've been using variations on Frumple for a while now (since around the time Diablo 1 came out), though, and I'm quite fond of it.

Been using Jack Thejil (Jack the Jill, natch) more often semi-recently... compulsively naming my ToME4 characters Jack <something*> is a habit that's been bleeding over to other things, heh.

*Such illuminated creatures as Jack Dwarfhumper and Jack Rotcrotch, ferex. One-legged Jack, too -- that one's actually mentioned in the cemetery :P

I consider Japa my real name, even though it's not the one on my passport. I was raised using it, and everybody that I know calls me by it.

Usually "Svarte Troner", "Svyatoslav", or "Dreg". I think the first username I had was "Jake3018" because that was what runescape spit out at me when I was 10 and runescape was the hip and cool thing to do back then.

Svarte Troner is of course the fabled Burzum song that nobody cares to listen to because it in fact isn't really a song. Svyatoslav Igorevich was the last Pagan prince of the Kievan Rus' before they converted to Christianity and I think he's just a total badass. A dreg is society's most undesirably people, and I've always thought it would be a cool band name.

I'm Kaijyuu pretty much everywhere. In some online games where you make characters, I'm known by one or the other though (my old WoW friends called me Lenna, after my gnome warlock).

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I'm definitely not the only Karlito out there, so I've got some alternatives if it's not available, but I've mostly tried to stick to this name. People I know in real life might use it too, if they're feeling whimsical.

I've had Ancre since ... forever. I can't remember when I first started using it. It's funny how I only realized how hard it was to pronounce in english when I moved to the US a few months ago. Oh well.

There have been a few usernames before that one, though. It's mostly because I started spending time on the internet with forum roleplaying games, where you created an user account with the name of your character - so I was known by my character's names at the time.

And I also had one nonsensical username - faelshlmir - I am vaguely trying not to remember. I must have looked very silly as a teenager.

I've had Criptfeind for a long. Long. Long time. Ten+ years. Which is why I still use it even thought it's... Not a very good name. At least it has a history right?

I used to have one name before Criptfeind. Back when I was so young I could not spell anything at all (last week) I went by a made up easy to remember string of letters. But that name is pretty long gone now. Sometimes it pops back up. But that is rare. At this point Criptfeind is ingrained so far into me that I would almost count it as a second name, I certainly answer to it more often then I do my real name... Although maybe it is less of a second name and more of a second person, as Criptfeind and David are two very different people now a days.

Nice thing about Criptfeind though is that no one ever goes for it. I have never had it taken before. So if you go anywhere on the internet and see a Criptfeind it is almost certainly me! Unless it is a porn site, then it is someone else.

I don't believe you. I think you are deliberately spreading misinformation to keep us from identifying your tomb-themed pornography ring.

First web identity was some stupid randomness that was dukemileg, eventually phased out around the end year of pultzing about on Gaia to Duke 2.0.

Currently fazing it out to a variation of Blind People due to periods still being a dick on most account servers.

This is a name that I want to change when possible. If you see a lrcp, wjno, or Brophiuchus around anywhere, it's me. I used to have some other ones as a kid, but I don't want to talk about those.
