Issue with the new hauling system

Under the new hauling system my farmer seems to be having some issues, it might be tough to explain so i made an illustration:




basically my farmer went from plucking food stacks and placing them in a food stockpile using by walking a distance of ~ten, now with the update he drops the food and hauls a single container first. he is now travelling +- 6x further to haul a single stack.

Its not that huge of an issue, he is still hauling food by his output is 6x less, i focus on training 1 plucker but his progress is so slow now and at 200 dwarves i will need a lot more farmers to keep the fort fed and drunk.

=/ is it just me or has anyone else noticed this? does anyone have any ideas about dealing with this?

We've all noticed this funky new behaviour. I work around this problem by ordering all plant/food stockpiles to not accept barrels.

It's a good trade off IMO considering what it saves on other chores.
1)Mine large area with gems
2)Dwarf grabs nearest gem bin and proceeds to collect all gems into the bin
3)Dwarf takes the bin back to the stockpile

It's a good trade off IMO considering what it saves on other chores.
1)Mine large area with gems
2)Dwarf grabs nearest gem bin and proceeds to collect all gems into the bin
3)Dwarf takes the bin back to the stockpile
But when you consider that food and booze are what keeps the fort silently ticking over in the background, it's worth reducing the amount of attention and micromanagement the farms, stills, kitchens and farmer's workshops require.

You can solve problems with management. I make separate, 0 barrel stockpiles to harvest the plants. The farmers harvest the plants into that stockpile, then other haulers bring barrels to collect the plants together. The only time I've had the system create an annoyingly bad decision is when my haulers decided to haul the 550 Urist bin of gold crafts over to the metalsmith workshop in order to store a few extra crafts.

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

Huh? In v.34.07 (pre-hauling) the food, booze and all farming is maybe the only thing which doesn't require any micromanagent at all, if set properly.

And now it's still pretty easy to set up, eg. Hokan's suggestion. No micromanagement required afterward.

All these threads and posts about people complaining about the flaws in the new hauling system (which do exist, I'm not denying that). I wish someone would do some dwarven science on the STORE_DIST_ options in d_init (right after path costs), maybe fiddling those to be less extreme could help. Heck, it even tells you what the values were earlier. Haven't really had much issues with this problem, and not much one for doing !!SCIENCE!!, so I probably won't get around to it soon... just sayin'.

Why not disable hauling on your farmer? Let some other dwarf come behind them, and maybe grab more than one stack too.

How long did that take...?

Will dwarves use wheelbarrows on bin-filling jobs?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I think the real problem is when you happen to see five of your dwarves chasing one fisherdwarf, because he decided to take the ONE stone pot containing ALL of the fish. Points go to Hokan for the 0 barrel stockpiles

The way I see it, with minecarts producing auto-quantum dumps, there is no need to use barrels to store plants ever (except to stop vermin eating away your food).

My messed up hauling story:

My broker is also a miner. A caravan arrives, so I designate things to be hauled to the depot and then request my broker go to the depot. I notice that he's digging, so I use Dwarf Therapist to turn off digging for him. I wait a while and check the depot again and see that he's carrying something to a stockpile (despite having all hauling labors turned off). I mutter a mild curse about stupid dwarves doing jobs they're not supposed to do and wait a while longer. I check again and he's still hauling something to a stockpile. So I go find him and he's down on level -66 (from surface), carrying a weapon bin. I follow him and see him go down to the area where he had been digging near my forges down at the magma sea. He picks up a pickaxe, puts it in the bin, and starts back up the stairs.

He had been digging down there when I turned off the labor, so he dropped his axe. Then he said "I should put that away, it belongs in the weapons bin up on level -1." So he goes up to level -1, gets the bin, carries it all the way down to level -106, puts the axe in it, and carries it back up to level -1. *facepalm* You're doing it wrong.

Huh? In v.34.07 (pre-hauling) the food, booze and all farming is maybe the only thing which doesn't require any micromanagent at all, if set properly.
Post hauling you have to keep resetting the brewing job at stills after dwarves cancel them.

But as has been mentioned repeatedly in this thread, proper stockpile management reduces the micromanagement back to normal.
