I habitually mute sound when browsing the Internet, m'self. Their screechings mean nothing to me. Can't hear it, and when they start spewing the flashing lights, I just pop open a different window and read until it's tired. I'm a unique view! ... that never actually saw the ad. Wheeee~

"Resistance" in the title got me thinking.

Why not try the same strategy as we use for anti-bacterial drugs? To prevent resistance, we don't throw a boatload of drugs into people's bodies all the time. We administer carefully. Why not the same for ads?

So maybe the advertisement companies would benefit from not shoving advertisements down our throat 24/7, but rather strategically place them at ideal times for maximum effect.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I'm not sure they understand this concept. Also there are so many different products being advertised that you couldn't really do that without some of them being left out.

We can also try to keep them somewhat relevant to their key demographic as well.

Food channels = Diet commercials
Travel Channel = Finance/accounting commercials and ads to places people haven't heard about.
TLC = Promote learning again. I mean, what does TLC mean anymore? back in my day, it meant The Learning Channel.
Porn = Meet singles (not just text them), or even ads that promote going out (insert "forever alone" here)
MTV and VH1 = How about advertising music again? Support the arts like you used to during the 90's or pre-9/11 era (I'm not kidding, since that date, everything went down the tubes.).
Comedy Central = Anything that helps promote creative comedic writing; anything that can broaden the horizons of comedy; actually funny commercials (Enough with the Axe and shampoo commercials)
G4 = Video game and new tech ads. Wasn't that their original format? Advertise games and tech, don't limit it to just X-Play to do the job, and ignore it the rest of the day.
Discovery Channel = Expand your educational horizons

Channel I've seen doing it right so far: Science Channel
HGTV is a close second

Everything they've been doing so far ad-wise is on the spot relevant to the channel and it's demographics. Although HGTV is not as central to the Home and Garden theme as it used to be.

Ooo, it reminds me. I remember somewhere on the internet I was watching a video and it had the pre-video advertisement. Now, I usually change over the tap to something else while having it muted so I don't have to watch the ad. The devious thing here was the ad actually paused if I didn't have that tab open, so I had to keep it on that page and wait for the ad to be over to get to the video.

I'm glad my lappy has an easily accessible mute button, effectively doing the same job as the mute button on the TV remote does.

Why don't the movies do that too?

Why would they have video game ads?  Commercials for private investigators, lawyers, and bail bondsmen seem like they would fit the audience they are trying to target more.

I like the Shellcore way of dealing with ads. It's a flash game, where all ads are voluntarily viewed, to help the developer and receive witty comments.
Essentially *press button and receive ad*

That could actually be a good idea, if the ads in question reached a critical level of crazy awesome. But they wont, so it'll just be stupid.

This might sound crazy, but what if we mega-billionaire corporations just stopped advertising. Consumerism needs to die a quick and painful death. *Insert anti-materialistic rant here*

That won't happen before we manage to oust the MPAA/RIAA from its entrenched spot of Supreme Whiner and Wielder of the Copyright hammer of Lobbying and Lawsuitery. If it does I'd be very much surprised.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/06/skype-calls-to-feature-ads-big-enough-to-interrupt-any-conversation/

Oh my. I really hope this idea will die quickly. This is enough to actually make me quit using skype.

This is just. Agh. Please tell me this is a joke and that they're not that dumb. I mean, somewhere they have to realize that, even if they make money via advertising, people don't actually come to them to see their advertisements, right ?
