thirteen (does anyone remember it?)
« on: June 11, 2012, 04:14:28 pm »

It was a FPS from way back. It was done in the visual style of a comic book (one of the first to do so by double rendering characters and objects to create the black penned outlike look). You wake up as an assassin with amnesia (I know its a tired old trope). It ended on a cliff hanger, as though there was going to be a sequel, but I don't remember there ever being one.

I turned myself into a monster, to fight against the monsters of the world.

Was it called... Fourteen?

In all seriousness, I remember this game. I never actually played it, but it must be good because one of my friends got a XIII tattoo on the back of her neck for it.

I think I remember one of my friends playing this game. I remember him throwing a knife at a guy's eye, and it had a cinematic/comic book/slow-mo effect when the aforementioned knife struck home.

The reviews seem to be fairly positive, and I remember it being fun.

That is definitely the one. Different kinds of kills would have an instant popup replay showing the details close up like a comic book panel.

And the sound effects were visible. You could see the BLAM! of gunfire and the tap tap tap of a guards boots.

Well... it's based on everything that is good about European comics. No superheroes (Arguably, the hero dude does get away with quite a lot) and no under age schoolgirls intent on showing you their boobs (Well, the ladies showing their boobs are all undeniably of age), just good Belgian comics.

As for the game I never really played it. :)

I loved this game. Sniping is immediately more satisfying when the game rewards you with closeup stillframe panels of the headshot. It also had some clever stuff like "listening" to footsteps on the other side of a wall by watching the tap-tap-taps appearing on the screen. Reviews bashed the gameplay, but I found it really enjoyable.

Fuck yeah I remember this game! When my oldest brother bought it I thought it was kind of lame, but fuuuuck was I wrong.

I never got very far in it. I think I got to the second chapter where he robs a bank? Not sure, I still have fond memories though.

I loved this game, I'd play it all day with my friend in deathmatch against the bots. We'd sit in a ventilation shaft and shoot the bots, good times were had.

Loved he graphical style as well, it was so different at the time.

I played this game to death when I had it. Missions where I was given throwing knives were my favorite. I could get through certain missions using only the knife's alt-fire stab.

I remember playing it, then I got to a forced stealth mission and deleted it.  Was mediocre.

Was mediocre.
I never played it, but here's my knowledge of it: The game review TV show X-Play planned a half hour special on it before it came out, because they thought it was going to be just that good. Then they got it and realized that it was mediocre, and had to rapidly reschedule.

I recall seeing this in my favorite gaming magazine. They gave it an 80 - 90 out of 100, so I guess it must be fun?
