This game is getting a lot more depth. Enemies now can tunnel into your fortress I think if you try the wall thing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The in-dev version has automatons.  In Steam, you can open the properties menu on the game, go to betas, and opt-in to the in-dev.  Automaton are produced after you've researched prosthetic limbs (which have ALSO been added!) and the run on coal.  They do not eat, drink, or sleep, and they can do everything a gnome can, including gain skills and attributes.  They ARE able to produce enough coal to support themselves, but they are unable to equip weapons or armor (they can carry tools, like woodcutting axes).  Additionally, like all things in Gnomoria, they can be produced by different materials at will, making it entirely possible to produce steel or gold automatons.  They also count as 'not wearing armor' and make decent monks.

I don't think it's viable to fully replace a fortress with automaton, as they don't do military great, but you could certainly produce a mostly automaton fortress with the gnomes kept as soldier-slaves...

Smart, been looking forward to automatons and prosthetics.

Oh wow prosthetics. Perfect. I got sick of my military dwarves becoming completely useless for most things after losing a leg.

Has anyone tried a squad of Shield Wall Dwarves with Highlander?
I'm unsure if the Two-Handedness of the Tower Shield actually permits the buff.

Automatons are pretty fun.  They resist a lot of damage, though it takes armor plates to heal them instead of bandages, so it gets expensive.  They also don't starve to death, they merely shut down when out of coal.  When a mechanic comes by to add more coal, they start right back up.  I've shifted all my important crafting duties to automatons, and crafted myself a god of metal to reign over my land.

So any idea when we can have a giant automaton mecha to stomp over the baddies?

Now, if you opt-in to the in-dev version, which steam treats as a beta.  They are sadly expensive to maintain.  Any injury uses a whole armor plate to have a mechanic repair, making them rather costly.  Though they are VERY durable otherwise, and can be trained as if monks.

Yes, but they are giant, or just gnome-sized?

Yes, but they are giant, or just gnome-sized?
...I don't know how to answer that.

I'm talking silly multi-storied stompy giant robots here :)
Like, some sort of megaproject giant golem... thing, that can squash any goblin that comes close, and maybe can be sent to terrorize the countryside.

Just wishful thinking, really.

Ok, I've heard that prosthetic limbs count as armor. (i.e. they take the armor value of the bar they're made of, and armor cannot be worn over them)

If so, does that negate WotG or highlander?
Because... Bionic Highlander.

I... hmm.  Bionic limbs are listed as equipment on the gnome's personal page.  Interpret that how you will.

Hm... I need to find a way to equip all my gnomes with weaponized wheelbarrows.

You need to find out how to equip them with a crate full of lead bars.

Here's a little trick to stop starving Yaks from leaving you (assuming they don't starve to death) while you're harvesting that wheat.
You'll need a lot of wheat tho if they haven't eaten in days.

1) Lock them in. If their pasture is enclosed, just build a wall or deconstruct whatever path leads to them. Or use mechanisms.
2) Wait until you have enough straw.
3) Stockpile the straw near their pasture, but within a larger enclosed area (with some gnomes inside if you need to rebuild/dig again)
4) Close the larger area, open the pasture.
5) Wait for Yak to eat. Since the Yaks can't reach the map edges, their "leave the area" job doesn't get triggered.

If they manage to eat enough, they won't leave. Even if they're still hungry they'll go back to the pasture, so you can lock them in again if you need to stockpile more straw.
