Trouble building an atom smasher
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:15:13 am »

Yeah, as you can probably tell, I'm new to mechanics.  I know how to link a lever to a bridge or floodgate at least.  I'm trying to build a small atom smasher to destroy any corpses I want.  What are the settings I should put when building the bridge, and how should I desginate the garbage dump?

at least 2 squares long. And you should specify which way the bridge will raise using the w,a,d,x keys

For example: if you build a bridge that looks like this ==== and press "a" while building it, it would raise <- this way. So that gives us:
=ddd

= : raised bridge, d: dump zone

Actually, a 1x1 bridge will work fine if you build it in a pit and wall it off (after you've connected it obviously). The bridge needs to be set to raise, any direction. Normally a 1x1 raising bridge causes problems because it looks the same in both states, but here that doesn't matter.

If a garbage zone is designated next to a hole, the dwarves will automatically throw things in. By surrounding the hole, the zone allows for many dwarves to use it at the same time without getting in each others way.

Well the fact is, my method takes 2 squares minimum while yours takes 9 and also requires building doors/walls/etc.

Why do you use that method anyway? Seems like an awful lot of work for such a trivial thing...

No doors, and just one wall. The main advantage is that creatures won't be caught on the smasher by accident.

I actually prefer magma chutes.

Hmm. Never had that happen. I must be doing something right... Or just terribly wrong.
