In my case, I really liked most of season 1, but the end just kind of fell apart and left my expectations low. If you've got similar feelings on that, then my opinions on this season may be of relevance. The early episodes seemed to be mostly mediocre with a few one-liner gems. However, if recent developments persist instead of being obstacles to overcome... I can see this season's quality trend being the reverse of season 1. The only dark spot right now is the last 30 seconds of the last episode, which involved a fairly cliche plot twist - however, I can't quite call it contrived. I'll need to see how it plays out, what the explanation is, etc.

I've started watching Gravity Falls again. Ironic, since I think I was the one who brought it to this thread. I don't know why, but I stopped watching at the Halloween episode, and never picked up again, until now.

You probably stopped watching there due to a huge hiatus between the halloween episode and the next one. After the halloween one, the release schedule was sporadic at best.

I saw the new Batman show and I will admit I am not exactly crazy about it.

The action is pretty bad, the investigation is bad, I HATE how everyone looks (Dear goodness Batman, why is your suit made of latex? And why are your lips so pouty?), and the very first villain they introduce is one of those lame villains that should be one offs.

Heck one scene had the worst "Enhance"... err second word... Scene I ever seen.

I am not ruling it out though. The Batman started off as a straight up action show where even the Joker was more concerned with beating batman up. Yet when it finally got going (A LOT later) it managed to be pretty good and has a excellent movie where he faces off against Dracula.

It COULD get better but I am not holding out.

I really wish they went and made a Batman of Shanghai series, the short cartoon was awesome on style alone, much like Brave and the bold, since it goes with the cheesy it makes it bearable (Bman is bland otherwise most of the time, much like Superman) and actually fun for the most part.

Still can't get over Young Justice having only two seasons tho, easily the best of DC.

Imma do some analysis re: recent Korra. These spoilers are, well, full of spoilers.

So, Varrick turning out to be kinda evil is good. Why? Repetition. It sets up a theme. Unalaq was the first mentor figure with an ulterior motive, and now we've got another. Like Unalaq, there was enough foreshadowing to figure it out before the actual reveal, so it doesn't feel like an asspull. One of the things I didn't like about season 1 was the oversimplification, and the lack of foreshadowing with some of the dramatic reveals (notably Amon's background, which was also deeply unsatisfying). What we're getting here is a theme of "relationships are complicated". I don't just mean romantic ones, although I'll get to that, but we're seeing a lot of people being something other than their obvious appearance, and people could've picked up on it in-universe if they'd been looking for it.

I am incredibly pleased with Mako and Korra breaking up. Part of it has to do with season 1. I didn't really much like the way they got together, because it kind of put Mako in the position of Prize to be Won, or at least this is the impression I remember getting. It didn't seem like a relationship that was really that thought out, so much as it seemed like something that had to happen because Korra was the main character and Mako was the Pretty Boy.

And then, throughout season 2, I'd been constantly feeling like it wasn't working. They fight in almost every episode (if not every one), and while they made up afterward, they never really seemed to learn anything. It always seemed to be a "Well, I love you, so it doesn't matter" kind of resolution. The writers played this up brilliantly. And I kept thinking that I liked Mako's relationship with Asami better, and I couldn't quite put my finger on why. But then it occurred to me - Mako and Korra are constantly referring to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. They put tremendous emphasis on that label, and I think it's to the point that they're not paying as much attention to the person behind it. This is why they fight so much - they have an idea of what "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" means, and when the other person doesn't live up to it, they feel like they've been wronged, and the other feels like they're being unfairly pressured by some obligation they never even agreed to.

And now that I see it, I can't help but think it's a beautiful portrayal of a lot of teenage relationships. Asami and Mako always seemed to be a ship crewed by people who wanted to be there. Korra and Mako seems like a ship crewed by people who think they're supposed to be there, because that's what people in love do, right? That they broke up when they realized it wasn't working is a tremendously powerful lesson, especially considering the target demographic, if the breakup sticks. And the fact that it was an angry breakup is probably a good thing too, because they're things that happen. If they can stick the landing, which in this case means A) They don't get back together and B) they nevertheless reconcile as friends (because, if I'm approaching this from a lessons standpoint, part of it has to be "And that's okay, it's not the end of the world"). Well, then, I'll be really, really happy with it, and I think it'd go a long way to being a Reason To Watch This.

Anywa, the season finale of Korra has been released now, so. Some impressions.

Not the best season, actually. About 40% was filler just to keep the Republic City character's busy, drawing focus away from the actual plot, which ended up compacted in a few episodes.

Ending heavily relies on several Deus Ex Machinae, which are unexplained despite the fact that a suitable MacGuffin was introduced earlier. (Wan/Iroh's teapot).

Over all, the season didn't seem to know where it was going. Which is kinda sad, as it made grave changes to the continuum.

Sure, it isn't amazing, but so far I have been solidly entertained.

Oddly enough, I have yet to dislike an episode.

I am honestly hoping it is legitimately good... since unlike "Life with Bonnie" where I loved it but I knew it was terrible... I can't tell if this is bad.

This might end up being one of those unironic shows I like that no one else does.

Everything involving spirits felt flat and uninteresting at best, or directly contradictory to established (and more interesting) ideas. For instance, we already had origin stories for bending (inspiration by bending wildlife), and the lion-turtles are pretty bland in this presentation. The only thing I enjoyed about the spirit world was the visual design, which was top-notch (except for Rava and Vatu). The Dark Avatar thing sounded a lot better going in that it wound up being. I'd have preferred enough (and different) exposition for him to gain access to all the elements than what we wound up with, since going Kaiju for the final battle felt really out of place, and Korra's astral projection thing came completely out of nowhere. I'm not sure if there's going to be continued reincarnation of Vatu!Avatar, but the setting's been so drastically altered that I think any future stories will have to be prequels to something, so it probably doesn't matter. Iroh's reappearance was... just a bad idea, all around. Also, they do an entire spirit chapter, and no Koh?

However, I liked all the non-spirit plot arcs, with the exception of the Bolin-Eska romance thing, which just carried a lot of Unfortunate Implications. The Korra-Mako relationship is the best reason to watch this show, but I don't think it's redeeming enough for me to recommend it overall. Especially because Mako never really seems to learn why he can't just go along with whatever's easiest at the moment - the closest he gets is getting glared at by Asami when Korra kisses him and he does nothing.
