Speaking from experience, it can be much, much worse than it is here. I'm sure some of you know exactly what I'm talking about.  :P
[Sneering Imperialist] Oh, who cares about those forums? They'll all fall in on themselves soon enough, people that stupid can't maintain a civilized internet.
Heh. I was more mocking myself than anyone else involved with it, because my behavior as an admin essentially defaults to "Eh, whatever.". At least as long as it stays small-time. We have an entire thread dedicated to random derails and most of the major threads are still partially composed of derails.
[Luck: 6] For the record, I actually have no idea what you've been talking about.
Check out the forums in Dice's sig.
Or don't. Ye goddesses, don't.  :P

holy crap.  When I called you guys bigger nerds than I, (and I'm a big nerd) I was not wrong.  You just nerded out on some random tangent for a page and a half.

...Hey guys, someone remind me of the record for derails here? Wasn't it something like second post, and then the derail continued until the thread died?

Also, if you think this is bad, you should see the tree pun thread. It's a solid few pages of nothing but tree puns.

Fond memories of that one thread that got derailed an average of 1.4 times per post for fifty pages a few months ago.
I'm not anybody important, but welcome to the forums, MagiGames.  Maybe see you over in Forum Games?   ;)

People. Derailing like that when Magic wanted to discuss something isn't cool.

Anyway, welcome to the forums. Hope you wasn't offended by the spambot accusing, we have a bit of a problem with them so it's become a bit of a meme. At least (or rather, sadly) we are no longer accusing every new face of being Pathos.

Welcome to the forums! Beware as there be dwarves here!

Anyways I usually hang out on the upper-levels so if you ever actually decide to play DF you'll probably be seeing a fair amount of me. If you don't though then there is still plenty of fun to be found down here in the lower ones (whether it be forum games, discussion about various shows, or even pun threads :P). For the purposes of timesinks I would heed the warnings given by those before me though, I know that at least I tend to be on the forums 2-3x longer then I actually spend playing the game.

A final thing that you should take care of while here is that the forums are mostly self-moderated due to the fact that we have only two mods, Toady One and Threetoe, both of whom are usually much more interested in developing DF itself then acting on the forums. As such we tend to be a little more forgiving of derails, but we also try to rain it back in again after a bit. It's usually seen as a very bad sign when Toady himself has to step in and lock a thread or give a warning, so we try to avoid it as much as possible.

Best of luck to you and hope you have a good time while your here. Who knows, maybe I might even see you on the upper levels sometime. ;)

The Happy (and sad, WTF, RAEG) threads are built of tangents. And tangents of tangents. And bringing things back up a page or two (or several pages, depending on if you're using the default posts perpage or 50/page, or one of the middle options) because they had an opinion but are off by a timezone or four. THe biggest topic in the entirety of the forums being the Happy thread should give you a hint of how railed things can be.

Welcome to the forums.

Nonsense everything can swim in lava, dwarfs can even learn dabbling swimming before their flesh melts off their body and they die...

But right! Elephants CAN swim in lava... temporarily.

On the subject of details Mr MagiGames don't ask about the penguins or ponies. We well okay you can ask if ou want to know, but we prefer not to talk to much about it due to incidents.

There was a penguin incident?

Or was that not recent?
