Raising this from the dead only to announce a death, hmm.

It's closing June 13th. (Specifically, it's only Nexon's American servers closing, not that that helps some of us.)

I never got into this game too much, but the 2.5D aspect was a nice change from everything else out there. I don't suppose there are other 2.5D MMOARPGs? Rusty Hearts is close enough, but I never really cared for its idea of humor.

Also, is DFO's story interesting enough that I should try to rush through the content, or is it just the typical lukewarm "evil forces taking over the world" sort of thing?

The Slayer's face in that picture is exactly how I feel.

Also the story is... hm. It's somewhat interesting, but you could probably read it on the wiki or something. But then, the wiki doesn't have absolutely everything. Might be worth playing out a few and seeing if you want to find out more.

I love the arcade feel. :D

It also made PVP really interesting, but DFO Korea removed the awesomely innovative Fair Arena, where you actually fight with your skill instead of battles being decided by who spent more money on items. :/

I too loved the arcadey feel. However, I feel the game would have been better without constantly waving its micro-transactions in your face. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Never did get to play a good dungeon with Aklyon.

Disappointed, but not surprised, to hear that DFO NA is being retired.

I know at least a dozen people (myself included) who have been saying for years, "I'm going to play the crap out of DFO when they fix the bugs and multiplayer."

I really do hope that a DFO-emu project shows up, so that the game can be played without Nexon's always-online DRM that ruined the game.

Based on the trends with MMO emus, I expect to see a half-working one about 6 years from now.

Except those were for games that actually had MMO elements. DFO never had any reason for being an MMO. Its dungeons are small, instanced, and not reliant on a central server.

DFO could have, and should have, never been an MMO.

I could say the exact same thing for another Nexon game, SMT: Imagine (pretty sure most the dungeons work similarly, too) but I have never, ever seen an emulator for it since its inception. Hopefully the higher popularity of DFO will drive something to completion in a reasonable amount of time.

EDIT: Or is that a Nexon game? Huh??? I'm confused now, I thought it was.

Man. I was waiting for more characters to be released before I started back up. Are they really having cash problems? The channels always seemed pretty busy.

I don't think SMT: Imagine is nexon I think its ATLAS.

SMT is also much more of an MMO the DFO. I mean you can actually see other people doing stuff and fighting. DFO you only see people in town.

Yeah SMT: Imagine was owned by Aeria games for a while (they are horrid and terrible I don't care what anyone says) and is now being managed by atlus online which is fairly new to all this business, but if they're anything like actual atlus it'll probably turn out okay. There's P2P benefits but by and large it's not super terrible.

Also there are open fields that you need to travel through to get to stuff, so I dunno if I'd call it capable of being offline. If we're going down that road then there's pretty much not an MMO that couldn't be offline, as a lot of free MMOs go by that model, instanced dungeons are just a recent addition. I agree that DFO could easily be an offline game though.

Obstacles to be overcome:

1. DFO isn't very popular, compared to, say, MapleStory (in Korea) or Linage. Also, they controlled their assets much better, with no leaks unlike linage and MS.
2. A team of people willing to work on that.
3. The precise hitboxes and physics is unknown.
4. Same can be said with the drop rates–a lot of them are unknown o_O
5. Decoding the assets is required, like the sprites, FX, backgrounds..

On the plus side, DFO has a 100% available skill stats, up tothe ones tjat don't change, so maybe that's a good thing. XD

That said, I would love a DFO clone with P2P PVP. Fight with your friends! :D
