I disagree with the student protests.

I also disagree with the governments reaction.

Please remember that applying for a permit is considered to be a form of protest, and that you will therefore need to apply for a permit in order to apply for a permit.

Quebec is all about their identity. Anything that stops it or infringes it is a threat. Try speaking English in some neighborhoods and you might get jumped for it.

The school riots were stupid and only a third of the students benefiting from the policy actually disagreed with the changes. It's just a small group that is making a lot of noise to keep something that everyone else agrees should change. Quebec's government doesn't have the money to lower university costs that much, and most people realize it.

However trying to take away the ability to protest is just starting a fire under your own butt. Everyone will rise to the occasion and oppose the ruling if it really happens. It's like the government is waving a flag that says "I'm Big Brother. Fear me." and on their back is a 'Kick me' sign. It's just too tempting to jump at them for an obvious overreaction.

I hope that it cools down in a few months when I go there to live. -_-

I can actually get behind and understand the initial student protests, because its been a series of steps the government has been taking steadily backing away from what was promised and what the young people of Quebec had.

They are increasingly paying more to the old and increasingly giving less to the young - it's pretty much the same story everywhere, but I fully understand why people would be pissed about it. Especially since the primary backers of the tuition hike and reason for it is lobbying by the big banks in the region. The students (rightfully, if history can be trusted) assume this is merely the first step. The government seems to make that clear itself.

It's a big fuck you - an "I've got mine without paying for it, but you're not going to get the same - oh yeah, and pay for my retirement while you're at it, you lazy slobs".

Am I the only one who's not so angry to this? I did some research into the bill, and the main points seem to be:

  • You're not allowed to protest within 50 metres of an educational site. There are already many more dangerous things that are allowed and many less dangerous things that are not allowed by educational sites.
  • The police must approve the times and dates and routes of any protest of at least 50 people. Any large gathering of people that is not an angry mob is going to have an itinerary, and this is police approval of that itinerary. It is also for the purposes of the next point.
  • If the police judge that the protest would 'pose a serious threat to the order and security of the public', then they have the authority to change the location/date of the protest. This I entirely agree with. If a protest would compromise public security and safety, then I would be against that protest. I'm not concerned about the decision resting in the hands of the police, because I would trust them to make a better decision than most people.
  • There is a date by which all education employees currently striking must return to work. This is essentially a subpoint of the itinerary point.

Reminds me of the student protests in England two years ago, when loads of people just dismissed the protesters as 'lazy, entitled kids wanting stuff without paying for it'. The problem being that most of those calling the protesters entitled were people who had paid no tuition fees, since they were only introduced in 1998.

Ed boy: the problem is that the police is also giving itself the right to refuse any protest without justification. the fine for breaching the law are just gignormous. Preventing people from striking is an attack on a fundamental right.

And honestly, when you're facing a protest movement that is already several month long, passing a low to forbid all the tactics used by the protesters before negociating is just bad style.

That and a gathering of 50 people is not that big in cases of major issues. If the government did something ridiculous and everyone stood up they could just point and say 'sit down' if they want to keep their change. Giving large amounts of control to the government isn't always a good idea. I understand their reasoning, but it's a step too far. People need to be able to protest no matter the circumstance.

If they handled his properly and held conferences with the protesters and heard them out then maybe there wouldn't be so much violence. They shouldn't need to fear their own people. If people are getting so worked up about it maybe they should reroute funds from other projects to reach a better compromise.

It kind of scares people when your tuition fees double over five years, even if it's still cheaper than most.

Ed boy, protests are never convenient for the ruling body. That's why they're protests in the first place.

This is... the absolute most amazingly stupid thing I have ever seen anyone in power do.

And that finally has been said about a country other than America.

Good to know we're not the only ones hoarding up on stupidity.
